Apologies for What Was Perceived as Inappropriate Humor
My post about Penn State jokes was intended as a continuation of an earlier post about the shaming of Penn State itself. In that earlier post I said that the Penn State "story" is about the actions of a few employees of the university and that it's inappropriate to blame the entire campus community. I used as an example something I'd seen elsewhere on the Internat, "Pedo State."

Earlier today I gave some other examples of jokes circulating on the Internet. I did not intend to disrupt DU with inappropriate humor, but that interpretation was put on it. I certainly apologize for this. I should have made it clear that Penn State jokes are unfair but they are inevitable. In a follow-up comment I wrote, "There is never a tragedy so great that there won't be water cooler jokes told about it."

Please accept my apologies.

2. I hate it when people post
Then feel the need to start an apologetic thread for what they posted. Think first.

3. Scatter Shot
I supplied specific examples of the shaming of the entire Penn State University community. This was in response to posts that argued that overgeneralized shaming was not happening. My point is that if you are scattershot in blaming everybody involved in the Penn State football program, it will be counterproductive.

4. So, you don't apologize?
Just a new thread to offer excuses for your tasteless jokes? No Thank You.

5. Shaming PSU
I don't know how much clearer I can state this, but I oppose an overly broad brush in blaming an entire community for the actions of a few University employees. I offered examples of this process as it is developing; however, this was perceived as endorsement. I apologize for that.

6. Don't worry about it dude

some of the people here will give you shit no matter what. we've all said stuff at one time or another we wish we could reword or take back. apology accepted. :)

*and on edit you're right about there never being a tragedy so great that people won't joke about it. remember gilbert gottfried and his tsunami jokes that got him fired from being the Aflac duck? they were actually really funny dark humor kind of shit but would not have gone over well here at DU which can be a bit too PC at times. i even remember the jokes in school from when the challenger space shuttle blew up. some people deal with tragedy through comedy. anyways i never saw the thread you're talking about - but like i said - no worries here - apology accepted.

7. This would have been an apology if you had deleted "Perceived as".

8. Reading My Mind?
You have no way of knowing what I was thinking when I posted about shaming the entire PSU community for the actions of a couple of members of the athletic staff. I can't stop you from thinking whatever you prefer to think. I did apologize for an impression some people got.

10. Threads That Blame Penn State
The "story" here is about a series of incidents that happened at Penn State but don't reflect the character of Penn State - an important distinction. However, nearly all the GD threads on the topic referred to the entire community, which uses an overly broad brush.

Blaming Penn State as a whole led to pushback on the part of some students. They're wrong to demonstrate in support of Joe Paterno, but they're really reacting to an unfair attack on their community. And fergoshsakes, hey're just college kids. Kids make mistakes.

12. Well, the main thing is, people misperceived your jokes, and you have apologized
for their misperceptions and accepted that apology.

11. It takes so little time to pause and reflect before you hit the 'Post' button.
Honestly, no matter what you claim your intentions were, what could possibly be funny about the rape of a ten-year old? Thre's no way to convolute and twist things into a rationale for that.

Did you also post an apology in the Lounge? That's where I saw your thread.

13. I read your OP again and this strikes me as a massive rationalization to post offensive jokes
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 06:03 PM by Richardo
WARNING: OFFENSIVE JOKE

Your OP in its entirety:

The Penn State jokes are Here

The Penn State jokes are here, courtesy of Michael Jackson. One exception is this one - If an older woman who chases young guys is called a cougar, what do you call a coach who chases little boys? A Nittany lion.

Nowhere in this OP, or anywhere else in the thread, do you give the rationale for posting these jokes as some incomprehensible 'protest' against generalizing Penn State. In fact, the title alone implies some measure of glee that the jokes are starting to roll in. A Michael Jackson reference? Really, WTF? And what's the 'exception' with the cougar joke?

It's not at all apparent that some kind of protest was your intent. And even if it WAS your intent, re-posting the 'jokes' with no explanatory text is just as offensive either way.

As much as it took some initiative to post this rather tortured explanation for your post(s), I don't accept your apology.
