1. I don't think so
A lot of the anchors on different sports channels were calling for Paterno to be fired. His actions or lack of, have been embarrassment to people who really enjoy sports.

31. Don't think so.
There's a movement to have people in the stands wear blue ribbons to support the victims in the horrible situation. You will see WAY more of that than you will some misguided attempt to further venerate JoePa.

5. The sportscasters could, if they really wanted to, strike
Refuse to call the game. Let Penn State -- and the NCAA -- know that this kind of behavior, this tolerance of brutality toward vulnerable children, is not acceptable.

DO SOMETHING. Take a stand. Show some spine.

Or else they, too, are enablers.

I can hear them whining now, with their six and seven figure salaries on the line. "There are signed contracts. There's nothing we can do. Our hands are tied."

THAT'S BULL SHIT AND THEY KNOW IT.

wankers, wankers all.

13. Yes, I am.
If you have an opportunity to do something to stop a wrong, and you don't do it, then you are an enabler.

There's an MLK quote floating around here that's extremely appropriate, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Or another -- "In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

17. I don't think they could stop a wrong by refusing to call just this game, either
In fact, I think they can probably do some good with this game, by using the broadcast to raise awareness of sexual abuse, to encourage reflection/thought about the victims, and so on.

"You're entitled to your opinion. I'm entitled to mine."

Certainly.

22. They can raise awareness of sexual abuse, of rape, of the whole
culture of absolute power corrupting -- but do it on another game.

Nothing is stopping them from saying, "We're not broadcasting PSU/NU today because we want to send a message to the administration of PSU and to the NCAA that this kind of system is simply not tolerable. We feel sorry that the NU fans aren't getting to see the game, but there will be other games, other Saturdays. It's important for us to take this opportunity to say to PSU, and to the innocent victims of this corrupt system, that someone has to pay a price for that corruption."

Yes, it's a shame that the NU fans and players might be deprived of the tv coverage, but isn't that what OWS is all about, too? That when a crime has been committed there are lots of secondary and tangential victims who -- even though they've "innocently" benefited from the system -- shouldn't have to then pay the price for what the actual perp did. But if those innocents don't pay SOMETHING, in essence giving up the benefits that have been provided to them by the system, then the perp gets off paying NOTHING, and the benefits continue.

Everyone seems to want Paterno and Sandusky and Curley and Schultz and even McQueary to be punished without any collateral damage to the PSU students or the Husker fans or the ESPN sponsors. But that's not going to happen. EVERYONE has been complicit, some to very minor degrees, but none of the players (pun intended) in the business of college sports is completely without blame. Not the fans, not the other players, not the students, not the networks, not the broadcasters, not the coaches, not the sponsors.

But you see I'm a sociologist, so it's difficult for me to isolate any event from its wider context. That's just the person I am.

32. they could do that, but I don't see that it would stop a wrong
Or why choosing not to do so would make them enablers. If a broadcast team did that, I would certainly respect the decision and respect them for taking their stand. But it isn't what I would choose to do if it were me in that position. Rather than making a statement by renouncing the broadcast booth, I would use the power of the broadcast booth to make a statement (or several).

"But you see I'm a sociologist, so it's difficult for me to isolate any event from its wider context. That's just the person I am."

Yeah, I've a tendency to focus on context as well (though I'm not a sociologist by training). It's a good thing to do, and the world probably needs more of it. But I guess it won't always lead to agreement about tactics :)

4. I was listening to a local conservative talk show...
...host this morning and he said it best---that he's never seen this amount of collective outrage
from America, since 9/11.

Americans are fully engaged, and 99 percent of them are disgusted, enraged and very upset about this.

Those yahoos who showed up at Paterno's house are total outliers--but the media gives the appearance
that they are the other side of the story.

The overwhelming majority of the nation is very upset about this and we've only begun to discuss this
and process it. The entire story hasn't even come out yet.

I think the sports reporters and their feelings toward Paterno and the rest of the pedophile enablers--
reflects the 99 percent of the country who is just sick over this.

23. Yeah this isn't divided by partisanship (nor should it be)
or anything. It's just depraved behavior, and as you say, we haven't even gotten the full story yet. I have the feeling that when they start digging deeper, we are going to see even more people get what they deserve for letting this go on for so damn long.

I'm disgusted, and everyone I've talked to is equally disgusted and heartsick over this.

7. I hope not.
As a PSU alum I am heartbroken and ashamed of my school. However, the student protesters on Wed night were 1000 to 2000 at most. Some were kids just showing up because something was going on or to perform for the TV cameras. Most had no clue about real life and the depth of the damage that had been done by Sandusky and any kind of coverup. There are about 44,000 undergrads at University Park and most are going about their business. We'll see how well-attended tonight's vigil will be.

Second, it wasn't a "protest", it was a riot, complete with overturned vehicles and other such violence.

As a victim of child sexual abuse myself I would not try to 'sugarcoat any shit' so there is no need to admonish me.

There are plenty of sources out there saying 2000. I see yours says 10000 and if this is true I wish reporters would be honest about it because that would indeed be almost a quarter of the undergrads.

Peace.

10. Actually, to that point, I saw the ESPN crawler last night during the game
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 01:05 PM by robdogbucky
between Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech displayed that some sponsors are already pulling out of participating in tomorrow's broadcast of the P$U/Nebraska game.

If that continued, I think ESPN or some other "brave," (stupid and greedy) sponsor would have to take the hits if they do advertise. Pay attention today, this might snowball.

I think canceling the game is too drastic, but I would not mind a solemn, half-filled Beaver Stadium as a protest. Wouldn't harm the athletes, they could still get the shit beat out of them by the Huskers.

they're leading their division of the Big Ten at the moment. If they win out, they end up in the Rose Bowl. :puke:

Even if they don't, the Big Ten has tie-ins with several bowls. I'd assume they'd fall all the way to the bottom of the pecking order: the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl or the new Dallas Football Classic.

27. Blackout proposed for Saturday's PSU game
Blackout proposed for Saturday's PSU game

"..."We definitely wanted to do something because there was no way we would sit quietly and let this go by," said Kate Branford.

Branford and Emily Wilkins were two among many State College residents who took to Facebook to express their anger. Their group, "Shame on you PSU," proposed a blackout at the Nebraska game.

"The blackout is to show respect for the victims and show everyone we are a grieving community a grieving school right now we are in shock we are ashamed of what's happened but we still support our team our school these kids out there on the football field did nothing wrong," said Wilkins.

This is designed to express support for the university but let it be known they are disgusted by the scandal that has rocked a proud university..."

38. So by extension, are you saying then
That you are entitled to your enjoyment of Penn State football and no matter what Joe Paterno or Jerry Sandusky or Mike McQueary did, the game must go on lest you be deprived of your entertainment? And does that mean Paterno should be reinstated so he can continue to coach winning teams, because you're a fan and fans deserve whatever they want?

You, as a fan, benefited from Joe Paterno's program. That's the nature of "privilege." You didn't do anything to earn that privilege, you can't do anything to divest yourself of it, but you enjoyed it nonetheless. And now that you're about to be deprived of it, you're squealing like a stuck pig.

Go do something else, CANDO, on Saturday afternoons. Read a book. Volunteer at a homeless shelter. Take a child to the park or adopt a dog from a shelter. You are not owed a football game.

YOU get a grip, Cando. It's not all about you.

It's called a mob mentality, and you apparently lack the ability to apply critical thought processes. You lack the ability to to find and assign blame to the real culprits, and instead lash out and attack the casual bystander. The fact you are hiding here on a progressive message board makes me wonder why. I pride myself on using logic and reasoning to guide my daily life. You apparently don't do so. You assign blame to the blameless. Nice of you on that. I'll not make any further comments on this matter.
