Husband loses, then finds Wife's diamond ring at landfill
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/broward/fl-garbage-wedding-ring-20111110,0,1295838.story

'Still, the story of how Brian McGuinn accidentally threw out his wife's $10,000 custom-made wedding ring has a happy ending. After plowing through dirty diapers, broken glass, and several unmentionables at the county landfill, the 34-year-old financial adviser found the family jewel.'

snip

'Desperate, Anna McGuinn, 31, called Wheelabrator North Broward — the division of Waste Management that processes the garbage. Officials there said her husband could come and search.

Plant worker Joel Ryan figured out where the ring would most likely be based on where that neighborhood's trash was dumped. Then he got McGuinn suited up: protective vest, goggles, a suit. He even leveled off a 10-foot pile to make it easy to search. And he warned McGuinn: people coming to the county dump looking for items they accidentally tossed usually go home empty-handed. Ryan said McGuinn was sifting and trudging through the county landfill — in unincorporated Broward near Pompano Beach — for more than 30 minutes.'

4. How the heck do you "accidentally" throw out a $10,000 ring?
:-)

And to have recovered it in a little over 30 minutes of pawing through garbage--dude's a lucky man!

6. it tells how he did it, a classic brain fart
his wife was changing the baby or some over task involving her hands, asks him to put her ring away, he was already cleaning out some old razors to throw away, and he absent mindedly throws out everything

it's one of the classic situations where you're already in robot mode, doing something else...and your routine gets broken but your higher brain still isn't quite thinking...you're on automatic pilot

8. Ring story
I lost a very special ring I got on a trip once. I had no idea where I might have lost it in the last 24 hours. I retraced my steps from the day before. I called everywhere I could remotely think of but no luck. Then I remembered we had a massive two week bonfire in the spring and we were all throwing sticks and what not in. I thought well why not I have looked everywhere else so... I took a garden hose and began an excavation. After 3 hours and about 100+ beers caps later the water hit and the middle fell out of what I thought was another beer cap and there it was. I ran around the back yard squealing with joy. I can say except for my wedding day and the birth of my two children it was the happiest moment in my life. Cleaned and re-sized!

13. Another true ring story
A friend went on vacation, where she did not want to take her family heirloom ring.

When she returned - the ring was gone. Thought it was stolen and filed a report.

Got the money, and MANY months later - realized she had put the ring in a trash bag before she left, figuring no thief would find it there.

House tenders had thrown out the bag -- so long gone that irretrievable.

Yes, she had a "new" diamond, but remains heartsick and feeling foolish.
