How much would you pay for this photo?

It’s not worth a penny over $4.2 million, if you ask me, but at least one collector disagrees.

The photo by Andreas Gursky fetched $4.3 million at a Christie’s sale, making it the most expensive photograph in the world. One can only assume the collector really likes stripes of green and gray.

The photograph was taken in 1999 and shows the Rhine River in Germany. Christie’s only expected the photo to go for a still-high $2.5 to $3.5 million.

1. $4.99
Seriously, I don't understand the art world, or capitalism as it applies thereto.

You should also probably mention that the photo is huge, more than six by ten feet in size, although yeah, it does seem pretty ridiculous. Apparently Gursky is one of those sorts of artists that the New York art scene (and art critics) have taken a shine to. So perhaps it's an example of what author Tom Wolfe once raged on about in the "Painted Word", that modern art has moved away from being about the visual experience and content, and more often has become simply an illustration of prominent art critics' theories.

goes for all artwork.

Art is about the artist, not the art. And it's also about bragging rights. Look how much money I spent for this frill. Could you spend that much?

25. Just like how people go ga-ga over "abstract art" that looks like something a 4yo did.
It's total BS by "I am more cultured and refined that you" snobbish assholes and rich fucks that want to flaunt their wealth and look cultured themselves.
