Republican deception hits Wisconsin poll workers now
November 11, 2011
By bluecheddar

Republicans are reviving a state law which is already on the books but hasn’t been used in recent memory. It’s going to make being a clerk in Wisconsin more difficult at a time when clerks are already bracing themselves for implementation of the new voter ID law.

The law states that for *first consideration* for either a volunteer or paid poll worker slot, you have to be either a Dem or GOP member and appear on a list provided by the party. But the calls and emails put out by the GOP suggest that the workers MUST join a political party. And they suggest that the workers must join the Republican party.

From an article in Waunakee Tribune

“Deceptive tactics?
…First, the callers give the impression that the municipal clerks have referred them, and secondly, they tell elections inspectors that if they want to keep working, they have to join a political party, Hermann-Brown said.

“They can make the phone calls. They can submit a party list to the clerk, but the pretense they’re making these calls under is not right,” Hermann-Brown said......more...

3. Given the WI GOP you might end up with Republicans
posing as Democrats for this. If they can run fake primary candidates they can get fake poll workers.

5. If they think of it, they'll try it. They can't win on policy, so they cheat. n/t

2. Question for our lurking Republican friends
I know you're out there, and I don't expect a response. In fact, I'm sure you won't respond. But please ask yourselves, deep in your heart of hearts, why it is that your party consistently resorts to these kinds of deceptive tactics in order to gain advantage? If your message, your position is so unassailably correct and represents the True Majority, why can't your party leaders and operatives simply operate in an aboveboard, honest fashion?

4. Here in Indiana
the two parties are responsible for appointing the election workers.

The Secretary of State's election determines the control of the Inspector position. Whichever party had the most votes for Secretary of State in a county determines control for that county.

In our county, we have 1 Inspector, a Judge from each party, a clerk from each party. After that there may be Assistant Judges, Assistant Clerks, and Greeters. The County Election Board made up of the County Clerk and someone appointed by the County Democratic Chair and County Republican Chair decide how many workers are needed for each election site.

There is a law requiring that appointments be made no later than 21 days prior to the election. In our county, either that is ignored or they don't know about it. Probably ignored because it is not easy to fill the positions.

The County Parties do the nominations for the whole county. In our case we had to fill 295 slots. The other side had maybe about another 100 slots to fill.

The expectation for each person appointed is that they are representing the party that nominated them. Of course, we do everything we can to make sure they are a Democrat.

We don't have a 2 year term as Wisconsin does. It is election to election.
We don't have a requirement that employers grant the election worker leave to work the election as Wisconsin does.

Now I don't see anything specific that states that appointments must belong to a specific political party in Wisconsin Statutes. Rather, that each political party submit their lists and the appointing authority appoints as needed from each list.

I agree that it is wrong to imply that the clerks are the ones requiring that they must be a member of a political party and paying an annual dues is required. The Republican Party should tell the truth and state that it is their requirement for them to be an election worker.

I have a database of workers that have worked elections since 1998 with their voting history, whether appointed to work Democratic or Republican, and other details. From that we now have better control on who gets appointed by us. We have fewer Republicans appointed by us now. And we attempt to appoint the same ones over and over as long as there aren't any serious issues.
