Folk singer Joan Baez jams for the Occupy Wall Street
Anti-war folkie performs on Veteran's Day

BY Matthew Lysiak & Corky Siemaszko
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Friday, November 11 2011, 3:53 PM

The irony of Baez performing on Veterans Day was mostly lost on the demonstrators, who had marched from their base in Zuccotti Park to Foley Square, just up from City Hall, for the concert.

In fact, some weren’t quite sure who Baez was.

“She’s a war hero who served in Vietnam, I think,” said 19-year-old Luke Fields, who hails from Morningside Heights. “She saw first-hand that war was a nightmare.”

Told that Baez was a singer, Fields changed his tune.

“It’s great to have her here,” he said. “She’s a legend, but no, I can’t say I can name the songs.”

Fields was not alone.

When Baez urged everyone to sing along with her first song, “Where’s My Apple Pie,” only a handful did because most didn’t seem to know the lyrics.

But there was loud applause when Baez changed the lyric from “where’s my apple pie,” to “it’s time to occupy.”

Baez is not the first 60’s throwback to sing in solidarity with the mostly youthful protesters.

MUCH MORE and Worth a Read.....at..........

1. Okay. So who should perform instead?
Green Day? Eminem? Rage Against the Machine?

They're kind of at the mercy of whomever shows up.

I'm guessing John Mayer probably isn't interested. ;-)

7. Joan Baez is a "saint" to me....so my post must have come across snarky...sorry.
The article is a good read as to how many don't even know who she is or was or what she sung.

It's SO GOOD that she's there. My post was in reply to those who trash "Boomers" as useless, worthless, Wall St. Supporters. But, they don't ever get their brains "wrapped around" the Protests of the 60's" because they get their info from "Faux History or Discovery Channel" or "Cato or Heritage Foundation" before they spout off here about "Boomers STOLE their FUTURE!"

That's what I'm saying. There isn't room for nuance on the Internet..I guess.

12. I have a lot of Baez on my iPod.
And I may be a little long in the tooth to be a Boomer (born 1944), but I've been fighting as a Progressive ever since the days when only Cheeseheads used the word to describe themselves. (That would be about 1963 by my calculations).

Baez has a permanent place in my music collection, even tho I have had to replace the various mediums of playing her music many times over the last 40 years! As I type, she is singing from David's Album, into my headphones.

42. What I LOVE LOVE LOVE about this
is that she deferred to them...and their protest. It was a no-brainer to most of us that it would end with her picking up her guitar and gaining a whole new generation of fans. But the gesture of her leaving her guitar at home and talking to the protestors first...shows a deep respect for the movement. And again...what a class act she is!

16. From many posters here on DU who say Boomers took their Future away from them...
Druggies and do nothings who then "gave up the cause" and went to work and left them with Social Security and Medicare Payments that they cannot afford.

So many posts here on DU and all over the Blogosphere that were trashing those in the 60's and early 70's who stood up for principles and tried to do what they could.

It was my "Back Attcha Moment" about how not all Boomers or folks over 55 are evil do nothings who worked for Goldman-Sachs and were Investment Bankers or Mortgage Broker who stole America along with Greenspan/Reagan/Poppy and Chimpy Bush and even Bill Clinton who caused it all to go away....The Revival of American Principles.

I thought that it was interesting that many on OWS didn't even know who she was.

That's what I was trying to say in my post. It was a bit of "Snark" against those thinking that all of us over 55 are somehow folks who stole from them and that they don't know how hard this long generation worked...but what we were up against was as overwhelming as it is now.

I'm not sure you will understand this. I wish I could express it better...

There is a definite connection between the 1960s and the 2010s. The new generation gets to take the reins now. Joan Baez is giving her blessing and her lifelong activist support to them. I give my blessing to them. And my support too.

They know who she is now. They're very smart young people.

18. What's the difference...I'm a Silent Generation, also...but hung out with the Boomers...
And that's what's wrong about this "Think Tank Crap" that tries to ties us all to "Generational Ideology."

We are who we are...and there are always people of all generations who can reach backwards to those younger and forward to those older to try to WORK FOR CHANGE.

That's really what my "somewhat snarky" post is about. Let's get away from this "Think Tank" Generationa Pitting One against the Other...and JOIN TOGETHER for CHANGE.

OLD AND YOUNG and MIDDLE and EVERYONE... WE CAN DO IT...! Don't let us all get hung up in some Think Tanks telling us we CONFORM TO GENERATIONS! WE ARE WHO WE ARE! It's our BELIEFS that MATTER.

Just saying....

31. Read "The Fourth Turning" by William Strauss and Neil Howe.
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 09:01 PM by Odin2005
According to them there is a 4-generation-long cycle and each generation fits into one of 4 archetypes. The generations of this cycle and the last are:

Missionary (1861-1882): Prophet-idealist
Lost (1883-1900): Nomad-reactive
GI (1901-1924): Hero-civic
Silent (1925-1942): Artist-adaptive
Boom (1943-1960): Prophet-idealist
Gen-X (1961-1981): Nomad-reactive
Millennial (1982-2005): Hero-civic
Unnamed (2006- ): Artist-adaptive

39. They put Boom at 1943...most info I've read is '45 for Boomers..but I'd agree that I'm a
Phrophet Idealist...category...except that many of my generation were Corporatist/Capitalists...and that's why I hate these generational sterotypes.

I read "4th Turning" and it's very interesting in a way...but too stereotypical and his sampling was "very small" according to the critiques of his book. They sampled in a very narrow group..was the criticism.

But, in some ways it was an interesting read...although as I said above and here. You can't pen people into generations and particularly not when you do label them with stereotypes of what it is "thought" they ALL LISTENED TO and ALL READ and WERE INFLUENCED BY...as if it was all of the generation at the same time.

But, the book is interesting...in it's subtypes which probably are some good "food for thought."

She's part of my generation, the generation who gave birth to the boomers. I can't believe those kids don't know at least who she is. Makes me feel REALLY old.

I have a new ambition for myself: get out those Seeger, Dylan, Carpenters, Baez, etc... and play them for my grandchildren.

28. It's a good thing to do. But, you know there's more who like that music than you'd think.
I go to "You Tube" when I want to hear some stuff rather than I-Pod downloads or whatever when I'm cooking and zoning and sometimes I read the replies. What's fascinating is that there are young people listening to stuff from the 50's - early 90's music and they say things like: "Wow, this was a great tune...and it speaks to me and I wish we had music like this around today..." Stuff like that in various different ways of speaking that many yearn for songs that speak to them in a way that isn't the music of today for some of them. And, not saying that Today's Music is inferior...it's just that many of the younger are seeking other than Rap/Brittany Spears Clones/and disconsoance of much of today's music. But, that isn't dissing today's music ...just that some see a different sound and a different message. "Different Stroke for Different Folks." Some like History...some live Now and others live in Future.

generation...TWEENIES is what we were. Wedged between two more sizeable generations. We have a unique view of things...I think. Many of us had friends from both generations and many had depression era parents but were part of families where our younger brothers, sisters and cousins were Boomers.

We had a unique place. We are small but, we still should have a voice...given our perspective that some of us need to still be VOCAL about... is what I'm saying...for what it's worth.

ON EDIT: We are a small generation because the men were off at war and the women were trying to do the best they could...so there was a "gap" in fertility...because of the WAR...

hornets nest whiplash of feirce, feisty and still in it to win it, Boomers!

I got to meet Joan in '09 and my younger, slightly buzzed and very dear friend told her how much she loved her because her Mom loved her and how she grew up listening to her mom play Joan Baez records. Then she clumsily apologized to Joan for blurting something that made Joan seem old and Joan laughed. She is a sweet and wise woman who knows where she stands and what she has always stood for: Peace, Love and Non-Violence !

PS I always believed in Peter Pan too.

here in NC...and most of the audience was all over the place with most I would say mid-40's to down to 20's-30 somethings. The couple in front of us were maybe early 30's and they had followed him up from Florida... It was their third concert. She worked in Real Estate and he was in Banking...(sad to say it was 2008 and they probably lost their jobs by now)...but, they were fanatics for Brucie)...He sung Seeger Songs and Union Songs that night and above the stadium that night a huge "O" came down with a rainbow...leading us to think that Bruce was endorsing Obama...as probably were most of us there thinking he was the NEW REVOLUTION to SAVE US....

It was an incredible night. We were above the "Mosh Pit" that were mostly 20 Somethings which was FULL!

So...Music that resounds and lasts with people is a powerful thing...I think...
