I Am Sick Of Hearing The Words Penn State, Paterno and Sandusky
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 08:52 PM by rsmith6621

None of the media coverage creates one more job, secures freedom, or levels economic injustice.... Frankly it is a distraction for other things.

This has been the lead story for four days enough.....arraign the suspects, have the trial and convict if guilty.

This story is sad and I do feel bad for the children, they have suffered a tragedy that will affect them for the rest of their lives...but I/we don't need to hear every little detail.

And YES the NCAA should ban Penn State for the rest of the season, next season and bowl games.

1. I think this is more about human decency and responsibility.
Those principles are important too.

3. +1 and In addition
I'd like to see a keyword filter option on DU3. It would make it a lot easier to go through the latest threads if I could filter out all the Penn State stuff. That would have worked out nicely with the recent Michael Jackson idiocy and a lot of other distractions as well.

19. Yes that would be a useful feature. I also wish
there was a box next to each topic that you could put a check mark into. That would enable hiding a dozen or so threads at one time instead of having to do them one by one.

6. hide thread would help -- it would also kill a lot of time and be an amusement in its own right
like whack-a-mole.

8. So why start an OP with the words "Penn State", "Paterno" and "Sandusky" in the title?
Why not start a thread on job creation or economic injustice instead?

9. Mostly all news is a distraction - that doesn't mean it's not important.
And this is important.

Just hide the damn threads and stop watching the news for a few days.

10. Yes because the ONLY thing that matters in this world is more jobs, freedom and economic justice
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 08:53 PM by justiceischeap
of course, if you would put you're thinking cap on you'd realize this story is very much about freedom and economic justice.

This scandal has already created 2 jobs...more may be created before it's all said and done.

11. It is a worthy story, BUT
at a certain point soon the media coverage should taper off and the rest of the country will have to move on.

Lest we forget this nation is at war and 13 million people are out of work.

13. It may secure freedom from abuse
if it persuades other organisations that they must never cover up rape. An example of an organisation that has already changed its rules as a direct result:

And finally let me recommend a column by someone I normally do not recommend reading: Southern Baptist Archbishop Al Mohler, who provides some wise, practical advice in “The Tragic Lessons of Penn State — A Call to Action“:

I discovered yesterday that the policy handbook of the institution I am proud to lead calls for any employee receiving a report of child abuse, including child sexual abuse, to contact his or her supervisor with that report. That changes today. The new policy statement will direct employees receiving such a report to contact law enforcement authorities without delay. Then, after acting in the interests of the child, they should contact their supervisor.

Mohler candidly acknowledges the way that churches and other religious institutions tend to want to handle accusations of abuse internally. He explains why that’s “both deadly and wrong”:

Any failure to report and to stop the sexual abuse of children must be made inconceivable. The moral irresponsibility that Penn State officials demonstrated in this tragedy may well be criminal. There can be no doubt that all of these officials bear responsibility for allowing a sexual predator to continue his attacks.

14. It isn't over.. Not by a long shot..
This is going to be a huge story, the signs are all there.

Sandusky was evidently recruiting for PSU until just before he was arrested.

This thing stinks to high heavens.

15. there was already far too much sweeping under the carpet in this case
Looks like you don't want to disturb your beautiful mind with the horror of this story for longer than a few days. Much better to sweep it all back under the carpet so you and the rest of the world don't have to keep hearing about something so icky because hearing about it so much might make you and the rest of society realize the significance of it and get into discussing how to change things for children for the better when after all children being molested is just such a distraction from important things.

:puke:

21. Had it been older teens or college students it would've been "abuse of authority" and out of the
news fairly quickly, but these were 10-12 year old children being raped. Even in our society that is far out of the norm and not able to be explained away. Added to that is the fact that this so-called "upstanding" individual not only got away with it for years but had help with that effort. People are going to talk about something like that.

22. I agree.
The media DOES need to cover it, but it shouldn't be the main thing they cover day after day, as it is now. As you point out, there are a lot of other equally important things going on around the world that are getting buried under this scandal.

I will say, however, that I am much, much sicker of hearing the name "Conrad Murray". Now, that is one name that needs to go away. The sooner, the better.
