Ala Gov at Dr. King's former church: Non-Christians are not his 'brothers and sisters'
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 01:32 PM by Still a Democrat
Only hours after being sworn in, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley gave a speech that created controversy and sparked fears of preferential treatment by saying that people who had not accepted Jesus Christ were not his brothers and sisters.

Bentley spoke Monday in Montgomery at the Dexter Avenue church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was once a pastor.

1. To be fair, that's not a bigoted, intolerant statement, like "Thank God I'm an Atheist"
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 01:32 PM by Warren DeMontague
We need to remember who the truly persecuted are in this country- Christian Conservatives, who are constantly bombarded with intolerant hate speech like, "The Earth is not 5,000 years old".

:sarcasm:

7. To the world outside Alabama
I am a liberal Democrat, live in Alabama and love it here. The state has its share of awful people, maybe more than its share, but I've found it a great place to live and raise my family.

When you talk about this incident, and you will, please don't tar all of us with the same brush.

But good lord, our governor a dangerous lunatic.

11. To quote another Republican governor, Gov. Bentley, kiss my butt
My ancestor started the Alabama Baptist Convention and he would not have had that attitude. While some of his descendants have been intolerant in the past, MOST of us learned from the mistakes of the past and many of us hold out our hands to people of all cultures and beliefs.

And a great big THANK YOU to my mother for leaving Alabama so I don't live under this jerk's governance.
