Knowing since 2008 that 'certain' IPod Nanos could overheat, Apple launches replacement program
How many of these are still out there? Best way to minimize the damage is wait till the affected one's are 6 years old and probably thrown out or replaced long ago and buried in a drawer.

Way to go Apple

Apple: Early iPods can overheat; send in for free replacement

Apple has begun a new replacement program for some of its first-generation iPod Nano units, which, the company says, contain batteries that can overheat.

In an e-mail sent yesterday to owners of first-generation Nanos, Apple said the batteries in Nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 could "overheat and pose a safety risk."

In its note, Apple said the issue can be tracked back to a particular battery supplier, and that the potential for such overheating behavior "increases as the battery ages."

The new program offers a free replacement unit to customers whose device carries a serial number that indicates the gadget contains one of the suspect batteries. Apple is promising that a replacement unit will be delivered about six weeks after customers send in an affected Nano.

They KNEW about this for several years now, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry investigated back in 2008 after units were causing fires and leading to minor burns. Apple later began a replacement program in Japan, and on a case-by-case basis elsewhere.

Never admit you made a faulty product until the economic damage is minimized.

1. I love Apple for their replacement policies, got a new battery four years out of warranty 2 phones
They replaced for no charge and way past warranty the keyboard and top of my black macbook, and threw in a new battery.

And twice with iPhones out of warranty they've just handed me a new one.

At the genius bar.

Without an appointment.

The genius bar.

Awesome.

3. I HAVE one of those!
It's been sitting in the pen-cup on my desk for YEARS because the battery simply stopped holding a charge.

Wow! Thanks! I just finished ordering my new one.

4. Good for you
The one I got for my daughter is long gone. The battery swelled and damaged the controls circuitry shortly after the warranty was up. Apple told me I was SOL. I bought her a Zune. She likes it a lot more and it still works like new.

6. It's good to have a spare.
You might send the Evo through the laundry or drop it in a toilet. :-)

8. Thank you for posting this
I get emails from Apple infrequently, usually selling something, and I delete them unread.

The only Apple products I've ever bought were a 1gen Nano for me and a 2nd gen Nano for dh. Because I saw this, I went to their site, plugged in my serial number and they are sending me a box in which to ship it to them.

I still use it all the time and haven't ever had an issue. I don't want to light myself on fire, but I am sad that I won't have my one and only original Apple product anymore.

I never would have known of this likely had I not seen your post.

9. When the iphone4 Dropped calls, Lord god Steve Jobs said "Stop holding it wrong"
Edited on Sat Nov-12-11 04:20 PM by Vehl
There is a reason why I never liked Apple products

Over Priced,Horribly under specced , and not truly an Innovator (99% of the things people assume apple"invented" were already there, in other products, oft years before)

And the recent Iphone4s battery and Apple OS Fiascoes are a farcry from the Apple's "It just works" slogan.

PC and Android are way better and will stay that way :)

PS: I predicted that the Iphone and IOS will eventually lose out to android when Android came out in 2008..and already the Iphone has been relegated to minority share in the smart phone market...expect Android to hold about 80% mobile market in a couple of years...with Apple losing this redux of the 90s PC vs Mac war yet again, cos Steve Jobs failed to learn from his mistakes

Free and Open will win over close and walled in any day. Hell, already there is a Quad core Android Tablet (Asus transformer prime) out. The Iphone 4s is already behind when it was released...and the gap will only widen.

10. Thanks. It appears mine is part of this.
My sister gave it to me after she tired of it. I did notice that it tends to heat up, not that I use it that often. Having had a flash-drive MP3 player previously, I have to say that I am unimpressed with the thing. And, I absolutely despise the software. I am also unimpressed by the fact that they will be replacing the bad units with another "first generation" unit, despite the fact that they are on at least the third or fourth generation of this thing. One would think that because of all the hassle involved, and the fact that they leave the owner without the player for nearly two months, that they might have the decency to upgrade it to a newer model to make up for all the troubles this is causing. I am becoming less and less impressed with Apple the more I have to deal with them. I really don't understand why they are so popular.

I will probably send mine in, as I can't afford to buy a new player, and I would be without anything if this thing craps out on me.
