and not at all like supporting internationally recognized crime.

It doesn't matter what a republican candidate knows, or if anything that candidate purports to know can in any sense be deemed rational. The first step in winning the support of the right wing base is to sound tough.

This is why Perry has developed the jingoism on Iran.
