Costco will interview Washington liquor workers
Costco will interview Washington liquor workers

SEATTLE (AP) - Costco says it will offer job interviews to any Washington state liquor worker who is displaced when stores close in June.

Chief legal officer Joel Benoliel told The Seattle Times ( http://bit.ly/rZHTJG ) there's no guarantee of a job.

More than 900 state liquor workers will lose their jobs as a result of voters passing Initiative 1183. It will take the state out of the liquor business and allow hard liquor to be sold at large grocery stores.

1. PA's trying to do something similar. Fucking Corbett wants the one-time windfall from selling them
I know I can go to any state store in PA and pay the same price for the same product - even if it is in a remote location. If they privatize it, not only will the state lose a shitload of annual revenue, but the distribution of the licenses will certainly result in lack of competition in many areas and that will just mean higher prices.

They tried wine kiosks in PA but the fuckers weren't reliable (about 1 out of ten transactions fucked up). The stores have been backing out of the deal. The things required you to blow a breath test, and scan your ID, but that's not what caused the malfunctions - it was mechanical problems with dropping a bottle without shattering it. They were talking about adding liquor kiosks, but that didn't get very far.

As for price, it took a while to get used to having to buy beer by the case to get a decent price. A case of most American beers runs between $13 and $17 dollars. Bars are allowed to sell six-packs to go but they really jack up the price - about double what you would pay for the same amount out of a case - and you can only carry out two six-packs at a time. That's kind of silly because they'll let you come and go as many times as you want.

3. Me, too.
But, what is even stranger to me is that one can't buy hard liquor after 7 PM or on Sundays in my state--except at a restaurant. And, the ability to purchase any alcohol on Sunday depends on your county. Also, one can only purchase hard liquor in package stores, and what's really bizarro is that beer and usually wine are sold on one side of the store, and you have to go next door into a separate store to buy the hard liquor.
