1. I honestly would not care or be in the least impressed if they did.
The hand wringing about the pay and the perks is a distraction from the critical question of who do they work for.

I also don't get the desire to make the job less attractive when it is overrun by fuckwits and millionaires. The pay and benefits could be zero and all it would do is attract the wealthy (who don't need the compensation) on power trips.

2. Last I heard, the Senate was part of Congress. I can see them ....
... doing something "symbolic" to shout about during their campaigns. You know, like raising their deductible from $0.00 to $1.00.
