Thousands of veterans would lose jobs if Congress passes postal legislation

http://www.workdayminnesota.org/index.php?news_6_5051

10 November 2011

WASHINGTON - Postal unions have launched a new TV ad that salutes our nation’s “real life heroes” and points out that a bill pending in the House of Representatives would force the Postal Service to fire tens of thousands of military veterans.

The ad, which is sponsored by the American Postal Workers Union and the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, urges viewers to tell their representatives in Congress to vote no on H. R. 2309 when it comes to the House floor for a vote.

The bill, sponsored by Republicans Darrell Issa of California and Dennis Ross of Florida, was approved by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Oct. 13. It would force the Postal Service to lay off workers, including veterans who served our nation.

The ad says, “Our nation’s veterans are real-life heroes. But when they come home, they don’t want a parade, they want a job.”

3. Well I guess we could keep the veterans and layoff others.
Honestly that isn't a very good argument.

4. It gets really tiring
Edited on Sun Nov-13-11 09:07 PM by MedleyMisty
when you're supposedly living in a democracy, when every single day you are urged to tell people who are supposed to represent you to vote no on some evil piece of legislation, when you have to desperately email and call and sign and hope that maybe, just maybe, they will see reason and not bring evil down upon those who they are supposed to represent.

And they wonder why the language of revolution is spreading among us and why we are out in the streets. Every day that they refuse to listen the rage grows, and the cost of their greed and ignorance gets higher.

11. Issa has been wanting to privatize the postal service for quite some time
Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 01:24 AM by Kat45
There is a move to close two of the post offices in my town and people are opposed to it. I write a local biweekly column and wrote it a few weeks ago about the importance of the USPS. The postal service is the second largest employer in this country. It was authorized in the Constitution. And it would not be in financial trouble if it wasn't for a bill passed by the lame duck republican Congress in 1976 that requires the USPS to pre-fund 75 years of future retiree health care benefits within 10 years. No other private company or government agency is required to do this.
