The Originality of Occupy Wall Street
The political movements of the left that I have participated in over many decades were almost always focused on or prioritized particular issues (wars, civil liberties, civil rights, poverty, collective bargaining, etc.) and/or particular subsections of the population (African-Americans, women, gay people, immigrants, etc.). The authorities almost always took advantage of that focus to separate and isolate the movement from society generally.

*snip*

In the short history of OWS and its spread to date, I am struck by its impressive insistence on remaining a movement around a very general and inclusive critique of an unjust economy (99% against 1%) that has corrupted much of US politics and culture.

1. I believe they are forging new structures for a new democracy
I really do. What they are doing will spread into the culture at large, eventually, in large or small part, but it will be (r)evolutionary, just as it has already been. It would behoove every single one of us who believes in and supports the goals of the movement to participate in whatever way possible, if only sending Light and Love and other good thoughts and vibes. And oh yes, talking UP the Movement with anyone who will listen. :D

2. The OWS movement mimics the many voices of the internet. And with no clear leadership those
authoritarians in the GOP are at a loss as to how to attack.

4. Yeah. The GOP got control of all sorts of authority: MSM, religious leaders, politicians, ceos, etc.
But this OWS is a group of people all talking from their hearts. And their message is being heard.

7. It would be an hilarious farce if the implications weren't so serious.
