3. I suggest one of the options should be: "It's worth a whole lot but the issue
is what one can afford."

4. I think that falls into "$5/yr, more if you choose to. Like now."

5. I don't think it's the same. I think for many people it is worth more than that
but the issue is a tight budget.

7. I normally have paid $1 per year
Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 01:13 AM by bigwillq
plus whatever the "handling" fee or whatever they call it is.
I think once or twice someone bought a star for me (THANKS!)

No biggie if my star runs out. I will just ignore the ads and continue to post for FREE!
Not really a big deal to me. If it were, I would just stop posting completely.
Their site, they can do what they want. I would rather they just let us pay yearly the amount of our choice and keep the star, but so be it.

8. I can't pay monthly. I can't.
That's for people who are working and have a certainty of income.

9. I was wondering...
If this is the last fundraiser, how are we going to get a star after the year runs out? So I guess we'll just buy it outright. That's cool.

10. $3.50 a month to use the Search DU feature. Everyone gets to post in groups, star or not.
I'd say the new structure actually benefits US more than Skinner. When everyone gets to post in groups even if they're not donors, the bandwidth HAS to go up.

14. I prefer the way it is now...
where everyone contributes however much they can afford...

Folks who can only afford a few dollars a year still feel like they are a contributing part of the community... folks who can afford more... more power to you...

IMO, the old fundraising model was a way for everyone to feel a sense of belonging to the best progressive site on the web.

:hi:

20. amen to that
This new system is not only exceedingly more expensive but cuts the financially disadvantaged off at the knees.

It also directly screws the financially disadvantaged that can only pay monthly instead of in one lump sum since if you can't afford to pay the $42 for the year in one lump sum you are charged MORE to pay monthly which adds up to $60 per year. FUCK THAT. Screwing the financially disadvantaged by making them pay MORE than those that aren't is Repub bullshit that has no damn business here, and frankly, it sickens me that Admins would even consider such a gross Repub policy.

18. I like pie, don't much care about star status...
I can ignore ads... elsewise I'd be a puppet for every asshole corporation that springs for a billboard. Centrist centrism is worth as much to me in a website as it is in a candidate... and it is reflected in the similarity of donative quantities received by such-like entities from me.

Así es la vida...

21. there's a potential aspect to the new structure that I think could address a long-time problem here
I'm not going to say what that long time problem is, but it's a phenomenon that has been glaringly rampant to anyone paying close attention and engaged in by a small number of individuals (so to speak) motivated by what I can only, at this point, assume is some very specific and deeply embedded form of mental illness.

If this new deal gets rid of that particular issue, or mitigates it, fuck me, it's TOTALLY worth it.

Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 05:44 AM by hlthe2b
DU is certainly worth a great deal to all of us, but affording that is the issue. I really hate to exacerbate a have/have not culture here. I do think $42/year in advance or $5/month will be out of range for many and that could include any of us if the economy/job prospects does not improve. In good times, I think $5/month would be very reasonable for most of us--now, maybe half that with a donor subsidy pool so that those can afford more (and to help others "earn their stars" could do so. Nice not to always have the fund drives, i guess, but in truth, we derived a great deal of benefit from them too--the egalitarian effort to bring stars to others is one very good outcome from them.

There have been drives (and some years since 2001) when I could only offer the minimum as well...

I think we ought to be informed how much the servers and miscellaneous costs are.

Democratic Underground is a valuable resource. But it has been the members who have made it what it is.
