Chelsea Clinton hired by NBC News
NBC announced Monday that it has hired Chelsea Clinton to become a full-time special correspondent for NBC News.

The appointment was immediate. Ms. Clinton will begin work on stories that NBC expects to use as part of its “Making a Difference” series, which runs on “NBC Nightly News,” said Steve Capus, president of NBC News.

Ms. Clinton has been a national figure since her father won the presidency in 1992, but she has remained — first by her parents’ request and then by her own choice — largely out of the public eye.

Mr. Capus said an intermediary contacted him in July with word that “she was kicking around what she wanted to do next.”

1. You know, I really like Chelsea and she's undoubtedly very smart
But when did television news become a dynastic affair? Jenna Bush, Luke Russert, now Chelsea Clinton.

There are so many bright young people who went to college to study journalism who would love a chance to compete for these jobs. But it seems that in addition to that degree you also have to have inherited a family name. I'm not sure I approve of that.

3. I thought exactly the same thing
so many bright young graduates with no future and tons of debt; we all know Chelsea isn't worried about where her next meal is coming from (isn't her husband a Wall St. Banker?). I really hate this kind of shit, the privileged get privileges the rest do not and never will.

4. instant ratings...that is all there is to it...
even if she fails, she will draw an initial viewership which is what they are looking for. anon grads from journalism school just don't have that.

9. Exactly. To me this is no different than hiring Gretchen Carlson as a "journalist"
Besides, isn't her background policy? Shouldn't she be serving at the UN or State Dept?

24. Agree. it's getting very inbred...and doesn't seem to be diversified enough in voices
from all walks of life. But, then...it's the 1% entitled against the vast 98%...so I guess it's too much to choose from for the 98%. Still...I'd like to see less entitlement culture...particularly in our news. Does "Conflict of Interest" ring a bell? Used to be important a decade or two ago..along with nepotism. Not so much anymore, though. I don't watch Networks so it doesn't matter to me. But, it doesn't really have a good "smell test" ..I'm thinking, personally.

32. That's just it, there's tens of thousands of bright people perfectly capable of doing the job
And there's maybe a few dozen jobs available. It's never about what you know, it's about who you know. Chelsea Clinton got her job at NBC the same way everybody else did. She had the right connections. It's just more obvious when your connections are extremely public figures.

10. As I said on another thread on this topic. Nepotism or Cult of Celebrity?
In the cases of both Jenna and Chelsea, I highly doubt they're the most qualified for the positions they've obtained. No doubt their consideration was largely influenced by the attention their names draw.

Nepotism? Perhaps. It certainly isn't an unfair concept to consider when some famous face gets a job they're probably not as highly qualified for as many others. I'm more inclined to think of this as a side effect of our society's insidious cult of celebrity. The reality is we live in a society where our fascination with celebrities elevates them to statuses they most often have not earned. Which affords celebrities privileges above others simply because they're celebrities. The result of which is children from celebrity families are skyrocketed into positions where their name recognition is the greatest asset they bring with them.

Making A Difference? Is it a part of someone's hour show?

She left Wall Street? Wasn't she was working for some company there?

15. I curious what job she is allowed to have?
It is certainly possible that she does not deserve this position.

Luke Russert was clearly advanced on name only. The guys is a clown.

I think NBC hired a Bush daughter, not sure if she deserves it.

But all the anger aimed at Chelsea does have me wondering, what position would folks DU want her to have.

In the mean time, I'll reserve judgment on her. Little Russert demonstrated that he was unworthy very quickly.

Who knows what Chelsea will do. I don't.

28. I think her hubby runs a Hedge Fund an she made big bucks for years at McKinsey...so she's not
hurting for money. Including that her Mom and Pop are quite wealthy and she's an only child. She can pass on salary to look good (and maybe she's sincere) but she really doesn't need the money. It's just the credibility.
