Funny thing happened when I donated to DU today |
|
I made my payment fine and received the correct email from PayPal on my wired home Outlook Email account. I also have the same email account on my Blackberry.
Problem is, I got a totally different email saying I donated thousands of dollars. I called the CC company and the correct donated amount was charged - nothing more. I'm getting new credit cards. The Correct PayPal email never showed up on my Blackberry.
I sent the bogus email to Skinner. What could of happened?
I locked up my router and WiFi even tighter, all new passwords and turned WiFi off my phone.

3. How much was the amount it showed on the erroneous bill? |

I know it sounds funny but sometimes the numbers in errors can give away what got borked. Like $6,553.50 or something kooky like that.

4. $2411.00 and 245.00 shipping and handling. |
|
It was a homemade copy, nothing like PayPal.

6. Damn, that shipping and handling is killer! |
|
But seriously, it sounds like a glitch on the DU end, maybe Elad will shed some light on this.
Hope it's nothing serious!

8. Nah, that doesn't ring any bells. I thought it was a PayPal screwup. |
|
Some of these bill pay systems give me the willies though, honestly, I can't say I've ever had any problems with them. Maybe once or twice, but quickly rectified.

16. Did it have any links in it? If so, it's probably phishing. |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-15-11 11:52 AM by jeff47
If it has links, it's likely an attempt at identity theft (aka phishing).
How it works: Send an email claiming some massive purchase with a "click here" link to do something about the order. The link doesn't go to Paypal. Instead, it goes to paypa1.ru or something else that looks vaguely legit. When you click, you get a page that resembles Paypal asking for your Paypal username and password, which lets you "cancel" the non-existent order. Thus giving your Paypal username and password to the thieves, who then use that to take money from your real accounts.
The good news is most phishing attacks are like spam. The goal is to send that email to as many people as possible instead of targeting you. As in it is unlikely that they had stolen anything from you when the initial email was sent.

5. Well I got an email from Skinner saying that he had found $15 million in trunk boxes in Nigeria |
|
and he would give me 20% of it if only I would chip in $3000 for the demurrage fees.
What the hell is going on here? This used to be a respectable left-wing website!
