Did anyone here see Bill Maher on "The View" this morning
Edited on Tue Nov-15-11 12:23 PM by Maccagirl
The tension between Hasselbeck and Maher was palatable after Hasselbeck used his appearance to berate him for some joke he made about her on Real Time. She wouldn't let him speak and even Barbara (her lord and protector) kept saying "Let's move on". Of course, at the end, Barbara said "That is what makes for interesting televion. Thanks Elisabeth!". If it had been any of the other ladies, they'd be kicked off the show for being so rude to a guest. I can't wait to see Maher's response-he always gets in the last word,

1. She came across as more of a twit than usual in that exchange.

Remember, however, that Joy and Whoopi walked off the set when O'Reilly was on earlier this year.

Hasselbeck would have come across better if she would have done that, rather than her snippy twit approach.

7. Jeebus, Hasselbeck's an oversensitive twit!
I couldn't believe how childishly she was behaving - she got no points and came across like a petulant child. My guess is Maher's gonna tear her up this weekend on his show - he'll probably have a New Rule just for her.

IMO, the best thing that he can do is ignore her. I think he did a great job on the View by staying very calm and looking slightly amused while she went after him.

Bill seemed a bit uneasy, didn't he? Even before Lizbeth drilled into him. I think womyns make him uncomfortable :)

he did have a great opening point about when there are only men around, like church, football, etc., they end up doing stupid things.

I like Bill, he's one of the sharpest tacks out there (altho at times I want to punch his lights)

52. Your empathy for Maher fits with your general POV on everything else.
If you thought about what he said re: exchanging Lara Logan for Hasselbeck, you still wouldn't understand why it was deeply offensive and revealed maher as the sexist pig he's always been.

Now and then over the years I've watched Maher's show. He's a fossil whose attitudes were molded by Hugh Hefner and Playboy magazine. Before Maher got a lot of plastic surgery he was looking just like Freddy Kruger too. :7

17. I guess I have to be
the contrarian here.

Generally, I disagree with everything Hasselbeck says, and agree with Maher. I appreciate edgy comedy, and am a huge fan of Lenny Bruce. "Religions Inc.," "Thank You Masked Man," "Comic at the Palladium" -- if you haven't heard these routines you've missed some of the best belly laughs of your life. (And if you want to hear something truly and incredibly ahead of its time, listen to Lenny in "The Concert at Carnegie Hall" talking about child molestation. It's January 1961, and he's openly discussing child sexual abuse, saying, "Just because he's your uncle doesn't absolve him." An amazing moment--in what is I think the most amazing comedic performance of the 20th century).

That said, I think making a joke about sending a woman off to be gang raped is over the top. Maher should have just said, "Yeah, in retrospect that was over the line. I didn't know the details of what had happened to her when I made the joke, but now that I do I admit it was a crappy thing to say, and I'm sorry." And maybe he would have, if Hasselbeck hadn't kept interrupting.

If Rush Limbaugh had made the same joke about, say, Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi, I suspect the comments on this thread would be very different.

Jokes about rape are like jokes about assassination -- especially when directed at a specific public figure. IMHO it's territory any thinking person ought to avoid.

20. when Maher made the joke about Hasselbeck, the insufferable harpy,
Ms Logan had just been detained by Mubarak. It was well before Logan was attacked in Tahrir Square and sexually assaulted.

So, sorry, it wasn't a joke about rape, but about detention.

30. Correct. He made the joke before Logan was attacked.
Bill made the joke as far as I can tell on February 4; Hasselbeck responded on the 7th; Logan was attacked on the 11th and the news broke on the 15th.

She's distorting the timeline because she knows the joke was funny.

and Elisabeth Hasselbeck being a bitch.

That was the joke, at her expense. A very misogynistic joke....and men on TV keep getting away with it!

I still say they all, (and we) deserve an apology.

Maher's half-contrite demeanor, and his comments about being on HBO and sometimes when you're on the line you cross over it, or whatever, made it sound like he was agreeing it was a cruel thing to say but he just didn't feel like apologizing.

So this is more like the Letterman/Palin bruhaha, where Palin deliberately misconstrued what Letterman intended, and acted the martyr. I get it now.

But it's too bad Maher didn't make it clear he made the comment before the Tahrir Square attack. It definitely left the impression he was joking about rape, and no matter what he says on his program or in any other forum, there are going to be millions of View viewers left with the same misimpression I had.

Maher must have been having a bad day. Generally speaking, he doesn't seem the type to let that sort of mischaracterization go by.

I still stand by all the stuff I said about Lenny Bruce.

22. I absolutely agree, he should have apologized to all the women
on the View, to Hasselback in particular, and to the audience for that totally offensive remark. Rape is not funny, and no one should have to go through what Lara Logan went through- and it certainly isn't fodder for jokes!

The whole interview was awkward because there was no apology on his part, making it difficult to move on.

36. Segue is the word.
From Wikipedia:

In journalism, a segue is a method of smoothly transitioning from one topic to another. A segue allows the host or writer to naturally proceed to another topic without jarring the audience. A good segue makes the subject change seem like a natural extension of the discussion.

Also used in music.

I could look it up, I know....but I'd rather hear it from my fellow DUers:

What exactly is Hasselbeck's claim to fame, anyway? Wasn't she on Survivor or something?

I suppose I'm curious as to why she's co-hosting a program where women of actual accomplishment are discussing actual issues (well, sometimes).

I guess I can see the need for one of them to represent the dim-bulb contingent. If Bill lit her up, she probably had it coming, based on the nuggets of ignorance I've seen her spew on occasion.
