"Fans" of the First Amendment
New York Mayor Bloomberg's a big fan of the first amendment. "There's no bigger supporter," he told reporters this morning. New York is a first amendment kind of town, especially with the Christmas shopping season coming up. "Come on out and do your thing," says the Mayor.

I'm kind of a fan of the first amendment, too. The question is, how to I let people know where I stand? Then it occurred to me - a baseball hat. With our own special hats, fans and supporters of the first amendment will be able to high-five each other on sight.

Not sure the colors are right, but here's the general idea:

We Support the MAYOR!

1. Should I point out the violations overnight
of the First amendment, or is that too uncouth?

2. Next Thing You Know
Next thing you know, you'll be defending people shitting in the street. Besides, how much government transparency do we really need? (/sarcasm)

"From the beginning, I have said that the city had two principal goals: guaranteeing public health and safety, and guaranteeing the protesters' first amendment rights. But when those two goals clash, the health and safety of the public and our first responders must be the priority," he said.

5. Consent of the Governed
I don't know that anybody really thinks this is about health and safety. That's the official story which the cops are using as a cover for muzzling free speech. It will fly temporarily, but that's all.

Governments ultimately do require consent of the governed. They won't let the Greeks vote on whether or not they're going to accept austerity. We'll see how long that lasts.

8. Free Society
We're not going back to medieval society; that's horsshit. The corporations are powerful, but not that powerful. The more they push us back to the 15th Century, the more they lose.

Bloomberg looks ridiculous, talking out of both sides of his mouth the way he is. You can't run a modern society without a buy-in from the people who are actually doing the work. You don't need to be a Marxist to see that! Mic check for government leaders who think they can still govern in the face of massive public resistance: bullshit doesn't fly!

10. Bloomberg Losing Legitimacy
Bloomberg's desperately trying to retain legitimacy but it's a losing effort. The City doesn't send out riot cops at four a.m. for health and safety reasons. It's laughable that Bloomberg is making such a flimsy excuse for his try-and-stop-me bullying.

They actually closed off air space over Manhattan last night! In the morning's light Bloomberg claimed that it was to stop people from shitting on the sidewalk. New Yorkers are going to laugh him out of town.

6. Midnight Raids
Midnight raids. Suppression of freedom of assembly. Muzzling the press. Confiscating books, fergoshsakes. Bloomie's going to back down; he'll have to.
