2. Either, Sir, Though O.K.is Probably the Original Form
It arose from a popular 'dialect humor' writer in the mid-nineteenth century U.S., who had a character who frequent said 'oil keerrect' for 'all correct'....

6. I believe the original form was actually "Hoka Hey," a phrase of
acknowledgment/agreement among the Great Plains indigenous people. I believe it spread from the soldiers' usage into common usage.

It doesn't make sense to me that such pervasive usage would stem from one unique source, i.e. Stonewall Jackson or somebody writing "Oll Korrect" on official documents.

I've been curious about the etymology of this "word" for decades and the plains indian source makes the most sense to me.

And now I'll go read what the most recent dictionary guess has to say. . . . :)

3. Apparently, the earliest known usage was O. K.
Lots of fun stuff about it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okay

The etymology is disputed.
