I don't even know what a DNS server is, but it was apparently a fucking fiasco for cox cable last night.

10. Cox is probably the single worst telecom provider in the country
Cox is the Huyndai of the telecom world

FYI, Saying "Nationwide DNS Server Outage" is like saying- "Nationwide traffic light outage" :P

33. you can switch to another, or add an alternate, dns server for your computer to look up internets on
Edited on Wed Nov-16-11 11:00 AM by eShirl
(that was me speaking Technical, by the way)

here's one of at least two that I use... I set it up a few years ago so my aging brain is fuzzy on the how-to details

34. You can find what alternatives may be available to you
Go to DSLReports and use their Find A Broadband Service: http://www.dslreports.com/search

I haven't used it but I do check the user reviews for services around here when I am unhappy with my service.

I did notice throughput was kind of slow last night. But they just changed us over Monday to a new package (10Mbps DSL and Prism TV) and there have been a few glitches.

35. if it's the dns service that's the problem, switching isp's to solve it is overkill
IMHO (note: I've certainly been wrong before...)

41. I think (bbut I could be wrong) that different services use different DNS
Servers.

My ISP used to reboot their system every night at midnight. So every night just after midnight, I had to reboot the DSL modem, then re-establish a connection to whatever site I had been on. PITA R US!

I complained every time it really pissed me off and eventually they changed their reboot time to something like 4 AM local time.

We've always had great service and very few outages. Maybe it depends on where you are?

40. No, they are pretty clueless...
I've had to work with their "senior" engineers before on the VoIP side and it was pretty pathetic. Once I was explaining that we had a customer on our network who had customers calling them on COX. Long story short my customer's customers were getting "number out of service" treatment (when what was really going on was all trunks were busy). I asked them why are they playing wrong treatments- (Oh, we don't know, we just picked different ones :eyes: )

Often enough that we have a back-up generator. Usually the first to lose power and the last to get it back up again. :(

13. The Internet
It is not run by one person\company and there are 10s of THOUSANDS of DNS servers in the country - and 100s of thousands more around the world.

Probably just a glitch at a single Internet provider.

Nothing to get all tinfoil-hatty about. My Internet in Maryland never had any problems - I was surfing the web and watching NetFlix streaming all evening.

23. You can't "overload" a phone line, saying it was "loaded" would be a little more accurate
:P

Even better, just use the term "all circuits busy" as you will hear as a treatment from time to time :)

Cox has occasionally gone out. I'm not sure why it would be homeland security or whatever. Outages happen.
