four pound chihauhau survives owl attack
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 08:44 PM by Liberal_in_LA
An owl attack has left a 4-pound Chihuahua with a healthy fear of the dark.

The attack happened when Chico the Chihuahua was out for a walk with his owner George Kalomiris in the Chicago suburb of Crystal Lake last week. Kalomiris says they were walking down the street when a great horned owl swooped down and tried to fly away with the 3-year-old dog.

Kalomiris says he kept a firm grip on Chico's leash as the bird dragged the dog across the sidewalk, and he managed to scare the owl away.

Chico was treated for a puncture wound caused by the owl's talons, and his owner says he's still traumatized. Kalomiris says the dog now refuses to go outside at night.

2. I'd be afraid too.
Hawks and owls are very dangerous to small animals.

After I saw a hawk in our back yard, I wouldn't let my puppy out unsupervised for months. I'm glad Chico is safe.

5. Well, little Chico does look a lot like a prairie dog.
Easy mistake, I guess. Glad the pup didn't end up as dinner. Also hope the owl didn't go hungry.

6. Owls, with their locking jaws and violent demeanor should be banned.

7. Sure, Chico looks mild--but a dog like that nearly killed my dog...
Got stuck in his throat!

(Just an old joke, please don't eviscerate me over it.)

Doing my paper route as a kid many years a ago, there was a pack of chihuahuas at one house that always used to get out and chase me, nipping at my heels as I pedaled my bike furiously up the street to escape them. To this day, I'm always on my toes around those little fuckers, lol!

Actually, I've had large dogs and small dogs, and I've loved them all. I loved my Shepherd-Collie mixes and I loved my weenie dogs (Miniature Dachshunds). Small dogs (and cats), especially, need to be protected in areas where there are predators like owls and coyotes.

It's great that Chico survived, even if it left him with a pretty good case of PTSD!

9. Yeah, it's an old joke
I first heard it late in life from an Aussie friend.

Don't worry though, I got him back.

We were talking on the phone one time about music, because I'd told him that I could tell when I was depressed when my interest in music declined.

My Ausie friend asked, "Do you play an instrument, pinboy?" I gave him a couple of beats before replying, "Only the one."

I got him again when he came here for a visit and we were driving cross-country. As he gazed at the sky, he asked, "Pinboy, is that the North Star?" I looked up at the blinking light and told him, "No, Warwick. That's the North Cessna."

12. LOL! Out of all the dogs my family owned when we were kids, the chihuahua
Was the most aggressive. He bit the mailman and he refused to deliver mail to our front porch after that. He never had a problem with the 100 pound Collie-sheepdog cross, but the chihuahua was obnoxious.

18. They ARE little fuckers...
...except for mine. Never would have got a chi myself, but my step-daughter picked ours out and I have to say, I love the little guy. But he's not at all like a typical chi. He's sweet and affectionate as could be with everybody and almost never barks. He's a chi with a big dog's personality.

19. Good to hear there's one chi in the world...
...with a sweet disposition. I coulda used one like that on my paper route, lol!

I wouldn't have picked little dogs, either, but I married into my weenie dogs. My Asian wife, for some inexpicable reason, had named them Siegfried and Otto. They had two entirely different personalities. One was like Grumpy, the other like Dopey. Great dogs, though, and a lot of fun. My little brother also ended up with a couple of them, including one long-haired version I hadn't seen until then.

More power to you on your sweet chi, Crankie!

15. Poor baby
That must have been one seriously hungry owl, going after a small animal with a big human escort right there.

I don't think an owl could pick him up, though. :)
