What Limbaugh said about OWS from WABC, Penn Station, NYC, and 600 other stations. |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-16-11 01:55 PM by certainot
Here's what Limbaugh said in first hour this morning....
praphrasing Limbaugh:
xxxxxx' Bloomberg liberated Zuccotti Park. lousy hippies thieves rapists purse snatchers sexually transmitted diseases, murder, filth, gunfire, scabies The protestors are so used to urinating and defecating in the streets so when they go back home to their parents they might need to be housebroken again. They’re going to have to put some newspaper down. endless parade of human debris, whining little wimps looking for free meals free drugs free sex it was never big, never any public support, not the backbone of America white house wanted bloomberg to get them out because it was one big ad for the dem party. 'xxxxxx
WABC is a parent, or the parent station for Rush Limbaugh, and it is located near Penn Station, NYC. Maybe it needs some protests too. There is no bigger PC cop and sensor-by-threat in US media than Limbaugh. There is no louder supporter and excuser of Wall St. deregulation and corruption.
He starts the ball rolling on the daily output from the 1000 plus talk radio stations that dominate political talk in the US. By sheer unchallenged volume and ubiquity he and his radio imitators determine what is and isn't 'acceptable' in media and politics. If he can say it from 600 stations and no one can talk back in real time it must be OK for media and politicians all over the country. Team Limbaugh is a major enabler and excuser for the way local governments and police deal with OWS protests across the country.
What also makes their message acceptable is that many of the largest of those stations and their talkers are endorsed by our universities. Many of our major universities broadcast their football and basketball on those stations, contradicting their own 'mission statements' by associating with the daily global warming denial, racism, misogyny, and lies.
Together, the coordinated national and local right wing talkers have been able to eventually message over just about anything progressives have done. How many protestors is one right wing talker with a big microphone worth? And the left has no direct organized challenge for that giant megaphone, as it distorts and minimizes all OWS objectives and intimidates and enables and excuses local governments and police.
The OWS protests have been one of the few political entities/events the last 20 years that have been able to message over the think tank coordinated megaphone that is the right wing talk radio monopoly. But how much more effective would they be if the Left stopped giving the right wing talk radio monopoly a free speech free ride?

3. why does he want to make the Repukes look even worse? |
|
How is this going to help his favorite Repub candidates on election day? It's like he's trying on purpose to cost them the votes of everybody who supports what OWS stands for, and make the Repubs look EVEN WORSE than they already do. i don't get these far right wingnuts at all and I don't trust any of them one bit.

5. it's a chicken and egg question i guess. |

i just don't agree that it's the fault of the left that media has been just about entirely co-opted by the right and all their money.

14. i would agree except in the case of talk radio, for which there is no organized challenge while |
|
it short circuits normal democratic feedback mechanisms that democratic media depends on. the left ignores it because it is so distasteful to listen to, gives us headaches and makes thinking people puke. the perfect weapon. if there was a transcript database of the main talkers for the left media to read and search to get an idea where so much of the GOP's groundwork repetition is done it would be a whole different story the last 20 years. instead the left reacts after the buzz has already been created and the lies established. we wouldn't be in this mess. but it is basically invisible to the left- a perfect media weapon.
talk radio, because it is ubiquitous and so centralized and coordinated can create like no other medium. the rest of the media is more corporate in the sense that they omit important issues or facts. even fox has to pretend to show more than one side, be balanced. fox could not do the kind of misogyny used recently in defense of herman cain that limbaugh and others did in order to intimidate accusers. 1000 coordinated radio stations can and has been creating their own reality- that's where the tea party got most of it's material.

20. you make good points. |
|
but even in the case of talk radio, what gave rise to the proliferation of right wing talk radio and the exclusion of a balancing point of view? my understanding was that it was born in the repeal of the fairness doctrine. a move undertaken while reagan was president i believe. now i'm not checking my facts i'm at work so feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

21. reagan killing the FD got it started but the left has basically given it pass for 20 yrs |
|
and let the right have its way in dominating most media and political messaging because of it.
it wasn't some cyclical change in US politics that leaves us now with such a dysfunctional major political party - the party of limbaugh

his trophy room is full of defeats for the left, from single payer to clarence thomas to bush and iraq, to wall st deregulation and global warming denial.
and most of it because the left hasn't found a way to study the effects of all that coordinated unchallenged repetition to 50 mil a week, endorsed by our major universities.

12. if a guy on the corner screams all day that you sister is a whore and you're a traitor |
|
and you don't get in his face it eventually your neighbors might believe it. that's been going on on a national scale the last 20 years to all liberals and liberal ideals.
most political defeats for the democracy loving americans the last 20 years are to some degree and i'd say to a large degree the direct result of these think tank megaphones being able to dominate large areas of the country with coordinated unchallenged lies.
