In Seattle, police pepper-sprayed an 84-year-old activist, Dorli Rainey, and a pregnant woman.

Seattle police spokesman Jeff Kappel wrote on the department's blog that pepper spray was only used against those "engaging in assaultive behaviour toward officers". He told the Associated Press he had no details on the incident with Ms Rainey.

Hey! Let's not demonize the fuzz, they are just doing their jobs right?

9. Again I say we need to donate goggles to the Occupy in these cities
that are using police brutality. Goggles would nullify the use of their weapons without responding with violence. It would be quite in keeping with the peaceful intent of the OWS.

10. What sort of goggles would work? Just any old swimming goggles? This is despicable.

11. Any skin exposed to tear gas or pepper spray will sting and require cleansing
so sealed helmets are actually a good bet.

Ah, the price of free speech...

14. So, you got me thinking and I did some googling and came up with a couple of interesting items. What
do you think of this resource? http://medic.wikia.com/wiki/Pepper_spray_and_tear_gas

Also, I've only skimmed this, but may be of interest: http://www.twlk.com/security/downloads/summaries/pstn9000285ct_summ.pdf

I whole-heartedly support the Occupy movement, but have only donated a bit of money on line (if I had more I'd donate more.) I have a number of items on the wants list for my local Occupy, but have been too chicken to even visit long enough to drop off the supplies. However, I will be in the city next Tuesday and so am gearing up to try it. I'd like to hang out and see what's going on, but I don't know...

15. I'm sleepy, I'll try to read the second one tomorrow, but in the first, especially telling:
"It should be noted that the Biological and Chemical Weapons Convention signed by almost all countries bans the use of tear gas and pepper spray in war. Increasingly, police forces have ended the practice of exposing their members with the chemicals during trainings because of the ongoing health effects."

16. Too evil to use in war, but OK to use on peaceful protesters. Sheesh. Peaceful dreams...

18. I spoke to Dorli the other day
Suffice it to say I work for a local news station. We had her number from the night of the incident and so I called Dorli first thing the next morning to set up an interview with her.
We talked for about 10 minutes.
I told her who I was and asked if she would have some time to talk to a reporter about what happened.
She was very feisty on the phone, and I knew pretty quickly that she was not to be messed with.
She did say she would talk, only if she was able to talk about the Occupy movement and the message they were trying to convey, not about her being pepper sprayed. She said that was not what was important.
She was very clear, she was polite, but stern about this. I told her I agreed and that I would make notes for the reporter.
She also told me she had been interviewed about 5 years ago for another incident(sorry, my addled mind, I am forgetting for what at the moment) she was a part of in Seattle and that she never saw it air, not only her interview, but news of the event she was a part of, and so she was skeptical about my request.
I'm not a big wheel in the grand scheme of things at work, but I assured her that I would make sure the editorial staff understood what she had requested in order to be interviewed.
When we had our conference call, I pitched hard to have someone talk to her. I told them pointblank, that yes, she would be good tv(sorry, it's kind of the way you have to pitch things for some to be interested)and I was very clear about her request. I explained how she was very smart, very aware and passionate about why she was there that night.
We didn't interview her that day, but did catch up to her the next day.
I watched her clip, and she did what she said she would do, and talked about Occupy and it's message. She was asked about being pepper sprayed and she dove tailed it into the Occupy movement.
Savvy, smart and passionate.
Cool lady.
