Occupy Wall Street Takes New Park, Near Holland Tunnel, Owned By Trinity Church
Edited on Wed Nov-16-11 05:43 PM by Leopolds Ghost
Police Enter Church Property To Evict Protestors without Trinity Church Permission

No doubt Following the rules of the new coordinated federal - state - local anti-OWS game plan

http://gothamist.com/2011/11/15/occupy_wall_street_claims_new_park.php#photo-1

Occupy Wall Street has taken a new park at 6th Avenue and Canal Street, by the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, according to a spokesman for the protesters. The park, Duarte Square, is privately owned by Trinity Church, and according to a statement from the demonstrators, a "delegation of faith leaders just arrived to support the hundreds already gathered." But it's unclear if the occupation, which was kicked out of Zuccotti Park this morning, has the church's full blessing.

The Times reports that "a delegation of protesters met with church officials to try to obtain permission. It was not clear how that negotiation went, but at 11 a.m., two protesters dressed in black, wearing black bandannas over the lower part of their faces, used bolt cutters to snip through the chain-link fence and the crowd began streaming in."

According to the Daily News, the first tent has already been set up. Let the drumming and fornicating begin! (proclaims Gothamist)

(Edit in response to Gothamist: those are Gothamist's words in the conclusion of the original article, not mine)

OP Note: Note the f*cked attitude that 1% technocrats who run Gothamist have towards OWS, with statements like "Let the drumming and fornicating begin!" These are the fools who run sites like DCist and SFist that cater to yuppie Gen-Xers that control the local political discourse in DINO cities.

----

Of course, they will be less of a threat unless they push back and return to Lower Manhattan.

Isn't it interesting how the jackbooted tactics are happening in cities with the closest ties to the DINO power structure (SF, Oakland, Boston, New York City, Seattle, Portland)?

So far, the Park Service and DC MPD have no problems with Occupy DC. They even gave October 2001 Movement a 4-month extension on their 4-day permit.

It's only in the cities where, according to anonymous sources, the Administration / FBI has been coordinating with local officials to "take down" OWS for some weeks now.

---

More tweets from Gothamist:

Update: Owen Premo, an Occupy Wall Street spokesman, tells us that there are about 50 people in the park at the moment. "The church has not given permission that I know of," says Premo. "There is a conversation happening between the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, which administers the space, and the church, which owns it. This is one of their open public parks." Premo tells us the protesters' intention is to occupy the park in addition to a re-occupation of Zuccotti Park. He confirms that the occupiers streamed in after a fence was cut open. Now, according to Premo, approximately 50 police seem to be mobilizing to evict them.

Update 11:55 a.m.: The protesters have moved wooden benches against the chain link fence around the park, forming a makeshift barricade that riot police will surely find insurmountable! The NYPD seems poised to forcibly evict them, but it's still unclear what Trinity Church—which has a cute blog in support of Occupy Wall Street—has to say about this.

Update 12:05 p.m.: The LiveStream from the park is fitful, but the NYPD is arresting all the protesters who have refused to leave the park. (Hipster Cop was spotted on the scene!) Some demonstrators are being dragged out as others chant "This is what hypocrisy looks like!" Other protesters are announcing that police are arresting a woman in a wheelchair, and Daily News reporter Matthew Lysiak says, "I've been arrested."

Update 12:15 p.m.: Premo, the Occupy Wall Street spokesman, says that in addition to Lysiak, he saw one AP reporter and an AP photographer get arrested. He tells us police entered the park claiming that Trinity Church had asked them to clear the park. "We were with clergy who are part of the Interfaith Occupy Wall Street coalition, and they said they had not heard anything one way or another." Premo also tells us "police were unusually aggressive, attacking a couple of people on the street, and throwing them on the sidewalk." At least half a dozen people were arrested, and the park is now clear of protesters.

Update 12:21 p.m.: The Times Metro desk Tweets: "Looks like about 2 dozen arrests at church-owned lot next to Duarte Park at Canal St., incl. journos from AP, DailyNews, DNAInfo." Times reporter Colin Moynihan writes, "A few of the detentions were done roughly—one man was thrown on the ground by the police and officers kneeled on his back."

3. Bolt cutters? Two protesters dressed in black with bandannas? This is NOT helpful.
If they asked for and received permission from the church, that's one thing.

If they didn't ask, they are trespassing.

Who were the guys with the bolt cutters, I wonder? No, I don't really wonder. Anarchists or anarchist wanna-bees.

Why would anyone think this is a good idea? Who in their right mind would follow a couple of black-clad shitbirds with BOLT cutters?

It boggles the mind.

5. +100 Apparently, the OWS protesters believe they're the only ones with rights
Anyone who believes these tactics will gain public support is delusional.

Have you SEEN that God-forsaken (literally) plaza in the OP?

17. WTF is wrong with you? You think it's OK to use private property without permission?
Me and a hundred or so of my most obnoxious friends will be over to bust down your door...! After all, we're "occupying." We don't need your permission, because we think your place is a "god forsaken" joint.

Way to treat the damn church who was trying to be helpful--overrun their private property without permission, and damage their lock with boltcutters.

Other groups HAVE gotten permits, but what really needs to happen is that this camping shit needs to end. It's stupid and it is making people think that the campers are obnoxious, childish and unserious, and don't give a shit about anything but fighting with the police about their right to camp.

That may or may not be true, but perception does become reality in the public mind--even if you don't like it.

19. "What needs to happen is this camping shit needs to end."
:eyes:

Tell that to Martin Luther King Jr. and the Poor People's Campaign.

And yes, if the property is essentially fenced in and abandoned, and
all the public land around it is tightly regulated to exclude the Occupiers,
I don't have a problem with it being reclaimed for public space. They should
have gotten permission from Trinity Church but then again, Trinity Church
did not give the cops permission to bust in there either, did they? What
would you say if the protesters had gone in there and peppersprayed old
ladies in the park or something? I'm sure it would be a travesty. Front
page news on DU and on TV.

20. Gee, I remember those days pretty well, and I don't remember Martin camping.
I don't remember him yelling "Whose streets? OUR streets!" or "You're sexy, you're cute, please take off your riot suit."

I do remember marches with themes including poverty, union organizing, fair wages, civil and voting rights....all those pesky little things that were important back in the day. I remember a lot of singing and discipline. I remember everyone being on their best behavior.

But never once did I see Martin break into private property and call that "reclaiming" it. Not once.

You don't get what MLK was all about, either.

FWIW, Trinity Church did not give permission, and asked the protesters to leave the field, and they didn't. Five minutes later the cops turned up. That suggests to me that they were called--BY the church. The church didn't want to have to deal with Zucotti-type business, so they made it clear immediately that the OWS people were trespassing and vandalizing the property.

The land was not "fenced in and abandoned" either--it was used for fairs and cultural events, regularly.

14. Conjuring Bolt Cutters out of thin air.
That's considered a Burglary tool. One doesn't usually lug those around in the City without attracting attention, unless you're a Police Officer.

18. Or an anarchist with a big backpack and a bigger attitude.
Or a bicycle thief.

Sheesh, do you think that the hundreds of bikes stolen in NYC are cut from their chains by magic or lasers?

If you think the police are the only people in the world with bolt cutters, I have a bridge for sale.

4. Unrec for gratuitous bullshit and rumor-mongering.
One, repeating the completely unsourced and apparently bullshit rumor of a huge overarching federal/state/local/illuminati plan to destroy OWS, which is known to only one random reputation-free blogger from Minnesota.

Second, for the bullshit shots against Gothamist which is as a rule a very reliable left-wing publication covering New York City. Learn to get a grip on what constitutes a joke, rather than instantly excommunicating anyone who you decide is a secret evil imperialist running dog lackey. So much for Occupy Wall Street supposedly being a common cause.

I'm not a City dweller, but I have a bunch of friends down there who regularly send me links. The OP is either completely unable to detect the dry humor in that remark on Gothamist, or else the OP is exploiting that as a launching point for some kind of French Revolution-esqe "Let's behead anyone who's not us" silliness.

13. That is not dry humor, that is typical "Indie Technorati" cynicism and that is how the majority of
Gothamists and DCists take it. Just read the comments on this or any other article. They literally ARE a bunch of Trustafarians and self-proclaimed highly paid professionals trying to "better" their community by reclaiming it from the 99%.

I should know, I tried to rely on that website because it is GREAT for local news but EVERYTHING is twisted to a gentrifier's perspective and the posters and articles are of a piece with the whole "Alternative Weekly for Wealthy Gen Xers" mind-set. Have you read your local City Paper (or equivalent) lately?

9. Gothamist, DCist is, and Has Always Been, a typically cynical online rag for "Indie" Technorati
Whose bloggership does nothing but denigrate members of the 99% including the poor in those cities.

This fact has nothing to do with OWS.

I'd like to also draw your attention to Obama's statement that "how much force to use" in clearing out OWS encampments is a matter best left to the states, even though they are coordinating with FBI and counter-terrorism units.

You also ignored the primary point of this, which is the state speaking on behalf of churches who nominally support OWS.

15. Funny, I've been here as long as you have. I don't know what you mean by imperialist lackeys
Seems irrelevant to the fact that the politicians currently in office are currently enacting the Bush agenda.

I'm not a leftist, I'm a radical populist. Posts like the elitist folks on Gothamist are WHY I don't associate with the organized left.

16. Look, how is "Let the drumming and fornication begin!" anything other than a belittling remark?
And how is it paranoid to state the obvious in the top of the post? Do you really think state and federal police would roll over for when OWS proclaimed their intent to shut down the NYSE on Thursday? Do you support that action / are indifferent / oppose that action but support OWS in general / only support moderate, law-abiding protesters that adhere to anti-assembly laws and peaceably disband and return to their homes / what?
