Teacher who showed 'The Daily Show' in class is suspended

CHICAGO — A teacher in central Illinois has been suspended after showing segments of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" in his class.

Rhett Felix, a first-year government and law teacher at Eureka High School, was suspended for six school days and will return Nov. 28, Eureka-Congerville-Goodfield schools Superintendent Randy Crump told the Chicago Tribune on Wednesday. Crump declined to confirm the reason for the suspension, other than to say Felix had violated school policy.

Mayor Scott Punke, a lifelong Eureka resident and uncle of a student in Felix's class, said he joined parents who complained to the school after the students were shown segments from "The Daily Show" starring Jon Stewart.

"I did, because of the language and the sexual overtones that were included in the show that were being shown to sophomores in high school," Punke said. "Many of the children don't even have TVs in their houses because of religious beliefs."

The three segments shown dealt with the sexual harassment allegations against GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain and with the issue of health insurance discounts for exercising, Punke said.

4. I remember middle school health class.... Teacher's name started with a Z and was really long.
He showed us comedy stand up in class. I am sure not all that was pg.I think the issue was it was the daily show. That is my guess.

11. IF he knew that this action might result in his suspension,
He should have shown his students some George Carlin telling the truth about our government. I like Jon Stewart, but he is constrained in what he is allowed to "observe and report." There has never been (IMO) a better observer and comedic reporter on the American and human condition.

13. Oh those poor "children"
Because as we know, sophomores don't engage in sex at all at that age.

14. Another example of what is so wrong with how we "teach" our kids
I remember the few "cool" teachers. Nowadays they are marginalized & told to teach to a standardized ignorance.

Hope he gets re-instated.
