I was amazed there was a place where we could discuss/debate current events and politics with civility. There were times when it wasn't so civil but overall, this place has been like a rock.

And you quickly learned that anything less than factual would not be tolerated by the members, what a refreshing idea that was.

This wasn't my first "family" on the net. In 2001, I was administering a politcal board of my own. We only had about 30 members, but they were friends, both repub and dems. I'm still in contact with a lot of them, and despite the fact we are all around 60 yrs old or older, none have died yet.

A small group also - and quite a mix of very bright folks (several with a very deep knowledge of history) and the very rude. One of the more prolific of the group passed on - and the reaction was much more personal than I had anticipated having never actually met the person face-to-face. These forums can invoke some strong feelings - in both directions.

I was watching the inauguration parade on television. I saw several guys holding up a very large sign, "DemocraticUnderground.com", several feet long. It looked like it was printed on a roll of brown wrapping paper.

I checked it out right away and signed up, but with a different nick. I decided a year later that I didn't like the nick, and I got this one. I can prolly still log in with my original nick, that is if they don't delete because of not using it.

The first days of DU were completed dominated by RWers posting trash on the board.

And I'm still here. A lot of my friends are gone, but a lot are still here. 10 years. A few months after the removal of my first brain tumor. Had a lot less grey hair. And my beautiful Daughter was still a little girl.

A couple other things are interesting in that many old timers have fairly low post counts, some even under 1000 posts. Plus, I did not measure exactly, but the old timers seem to be predominantly female.

id = 1XXXXX in the URL. (except for members over 100,000 where it says 2XXXXX.)

The XXXXX being the member number. However, they may not be in order of registration. Things may have gotten shuffled around in the switch from DU1 to DU2. At least Bob, with the lowest number is saying he joined in October and others with higher numbers are saying they joined in May. But in general, you can see that people with later registration dates have higher numbers than those with earlier resigstration dates. I thought it would be fun to see who had the lowest number. I never did check Skinner's number though. It should be less than 10.

as it was about June when I came over and registered.

By 2001, I was a veteran of the 'net, with about 10 years of experience already behind me. I'm not a prolific poster--even on other sites, I tended not to post a huge lot, so at DU, it took me about two or three years to get my first 1000.

I've left many of the old sites I've posted to--it's difficult to keep up with a few, though. I remember a couple of the oldest ones at yahoo I was part of: The I Hate George Bush Fan Club, and The Real I Hate George Bush Fan Club. They were a hoot!

I discovered DU at work one day in early 2001. Someone in IT had made FR the company's home page. It took me about a second to figure out where those guys were coming from. I kept reading insulting posts about "DUmmies" & DU so I came here immediately. I've been coming here ever since.
