Is There a Freudian In the House?
There used to be a lot more Freudianism than there is now. Freudianism was harmless good fun fifty years ago, but it's worn off. However, sometimes a Freudian analysis suggests itself so strongly that nothing else will do. The argument for repression of the Occupy movements is being made in terms of toilet training. The campsites being occupied have to be broken up because the protesters are incontinent.

Don't laugh. This argument is repeated over again so often that it suggests that people who oppose the occupation are afraid to let themselves go because of negative associations with that word. What would a Freudian do with the evidence presented here? Are the banks and the other one-percenters parental figures dealing with "messes" left by children who are still infantile?

Perhaps the return to Freudianism is itself a kind of - ahem - regression. There are opportunities for humor here that will be lost on a generation that wasn't taught Fraudianism in Child Psych classees and again in literature courses as a staple of analysis. Where's the old Woody Allen now that we need him again?
