http://www.focus-fen.net/index.php?id=n264431 Romania's anti-discrimination council on Tuesday fined the mayor of a northern city for having built a "discriminatory" wall separating mainly Roma housing blocs from a busy main street, AFP reported. In a statement the council said that it had "stated unanimously that the construction of the wall separating social housing occupied mainly by Roma... of (the town of) Baia Mare from the main street... constitutes discrimination."
The council fined Mayor Catalin Chereches 6,000 lei (1,400 euros), recommended that the wall be torn down and that measures be put in place to improve Roma living conditions.
Chereches remained defiant, saying that he had no intention of tearing down the barrier which according to him was meant to protect children from cars on the street, according to the HotNews.ro website.
The concrete barrier erected in July is about two metres (6.5 feet) high and runs 100 metres long, separating two apartment blocs housing 180 mainly Roma families from a busy main street next door.
