The original lawsuit was brought by 15 citizens from around the state, including two prominent Democrats - Judy Robson, the former state Senate majority leader, and Alvin Baldus, who served in the U.S. House and state Assembly.
The group has attacked the maps on a number of fronts and has said they shift too many voters from one district to another. Among them are
299,533 who last had a chance to vote for a state senator in 2008 but couldn't do so again in a regular election until 2014, rather than 2012.
The state, which is represented by Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, has said it does not oppose allowing the Republican members of Congress to intervene in the case.
The Latino rights group Voces de la Frontera has also sued over the maps because of the way lines were drawn through Latino communities in Milwaukee. Voces this week asked to consolidate the two cases over the maps, and both the state and the group that brought the original lawsuit have said they do not oppose the effort.

So the Republicans plan would lock 300,000 voters out of the process of selecting a State Senator for six years!
Additionally, as expected, the plan concedes some (already strongly Democratic) districts to the Democrats to strengthen Republican chances in "swing" districts.
