Chris Hays had Ret. Philly Police Chief Capt. Ray Lewis on this morning - |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-19-11 01:11 PM by gateley
If you didn't catch it, see if you can on the rebound. (Capt. Lewis is the one who was arrested in uniform.)
It was good to hear a perspective from a cop's view. He said the reason for the White Shirts is to supervise. The White Shirts were fighting - who was supervising? That's when you get anarchy.
He said he knew his comments would be misquoted (and they were), and said how he planned to try to avoid that by giving NO statements to Fox News. :7
He said Corporate America is using their own police department as hired thugs (when Chris showed him the new vid of cops pepper spraying the people just SITTING at UC DAVIS, commented it looked like they were spraying cockroaches).
He's quite a guy, worth the watch.
We have a retired police chief from Seattle who lives up in the San Juans who is cut from the same cloth. The tragedy is they are retired.
Edit to correct location to UC Davis. Being a child of the '60's I of course "heard" Berkeley. :7

2. This sounds like the beginning of CorpSeCorps... |
|
I am in the process of reading Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood, in which the country is ruled by the thuggish CorpSeCorps, which began as security for global megacorporations but now has all the power. Pretty chilling.

4. Wow - I'll MAYBE check that out. Don't know if I'm brave |
|
enough to read a book like that and just feel more and more frustrated and suffocated because I see it happening around me.
The footage make me feel sick.

8. Just went to Amazon - learned it was the second in a trilogy, |
|
do you recommend book one?
Had to laugh at the first review on Amazon - I think this reviewer probably predicting how I will be viewing this:
5.0 out of 5 stars Margaret Atwood makes me want to stick my head in the sand..., July 30, 2009
I know that sounds bad, but her dystopian visions are so profoundly disturbing, I find they influence my thinking forever after. Say what you will--her nightmares are not easy to dismiss!
:scared:

each really stood alone, but I may go ahead and start there. And then curse you when I become hooked. :7 :hi:

3. Corporate cops? How does that work? How can the distinction be made? |
|
Are they posing as city/state police or do they actually have a separate department with the corporations and a private payment system?

That's wrong on every level.

10. is that the scoop Hayes was promoting? |
|
And let me see if I have this straight. The white shirts were not NYPD, or local law enforcement of any kind, but were a police force belonging to a corporate entity? Who do they answer to?

11. No -- the scoop is the memo linked to on DU last night. |
|
If you didn't see it let me know and I'll go find the link. I think you can see it online, too, if you're interested.
No -- I didn't express it clearly, probably. The White Shirts ARE NYPD, those in a supervisory capacity. He was saying that he witnessed the White Shirts themselves getting into the fray, so there was nobody supervising.
And I don't think he literally meant that the PD's are paid militia, not like Blackwater or something, but that it's the corporations/money behind the scenes that are dictating their behavior/reaction.

17. Was he arrested for impersonating a police officer? |
|
Generally, it is against the law for someone who is not a police officer to wear a police uniform.
Being retired from a force in another state doesn't make you a police officer.

18. You know, I don't know what he was charged with. He was |
|
wearing his uniform again today, too. I wondered about that but figured it must be okay otherwise he'd have been wearing a suit.
It sure looks impressive, though, and gets the point across. :7

19. I believe a retired military officer, or police officer, is "allowed" to wear their uniform. |
|
You got a problem with that?

20. I would have an issue with a retired cop walking around the city.... |
|
in uniform because people would assume they were on duty police. When they actually have no authority.
Different for military as people do not expect them to do military work.
