No man is an island - by John Donne
ThomWV's post reminded me of this poem.

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

2. Thank you, my dear Swede...
This is an ageless poem.

I have always loved it, and yes, it's perfect for ThomWV today.

3. Meditation XVII
PERCHANCE he for whom this bell tolls may be so ill as that he knows not it tolls for him. And perchance I may think myself so much better than I am, as that they who are about me, and see my state, may have caused it to toll for me, and I know not that ...

4. If every man's death dimisheth me,
... it must follow that every man's birth increaseth me.

Since I was born, the world's population has doubled. This must be why I'm now twice the man I was.
