Boca, gaining a rep for exotic tacos, plans lion-meat offering
Valerie Vinyard
Arizona Daily Star Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Thursday, January 20, 2011

Il Vinaio restaurant in Mesa served lion burgers last year to mark the World Cup in South Africa. The owner drew a crowd of diners, but some picketers as well.

In the six months since it launched Exotic Taco Wednesdays, Boca Tacos y Tequila has served up python, alligator, elk, kangaroo and rattlesnake.

...........................

"We've done just about anything we can get our hands on," said owner Bryan Mazon. "Every Wednesday we do something a little bit different."

Last week he announced on Boca's Facebook page that the UA-area taco shop was accepting prepaid orders for African lion, to be served on Feb. 16. Orders must be placed by 3 p.m. Feb. 7.

5. Isn't that more than a little obscure?
Have we really made national news because of Gino's?

13. I remember. I was thinking of our non-PA friends on DU.
They might not get the reference. Plus, it isn't like he was EATING undocumented workers.

Too bad Gino's steaks are still the best. (You're not a Pat's partisan, are you?)

7. Left Brain: This is a capitalist understanding his potential clients.
In our capitalist nation, I see no problem with this.

Right Brain: I love animals and hate capitalism.

8. I honestly don't see the problem.
If it is something that is legal to be served (in America for human consumption) then why should this restaurant be criticized for doing so?

If people are against lion being served they should write their representative.

Boca Tacos y Tequila is messed up. Us folks here in Texas are kinda sensitive to being painted with that broad brush, so I'll stand with Arizona in solidarity.

11. Misleading subject line
Maybe "AZ Restaurant Owner is Messed Up", or something like that?

Arizona is my home. And, even though there has been much controversy here, such as SB1070, and even more so, the recent tragedy in my hometown of Tucson, I take it personally that the subject line comes across as to paint my entire state as messed up. I could open up a post naming any entire state as messed up, too, but I wouldn't...it would be extremely insensitive of me to do so, and would show lack of consideration for other DU'ers.

I don't agree with that restaurant owner, but am sure there are other businesses in other states that make weird or even illegal choices to draw in customers, but I would never paint an entire state with such a broad brush nd deem the entire state as "messed up".

14. I've eaten elk, alligator, kangaroo, and rattlesnake
The 'roo meat was kind of tough, but the alligator made a nice spaghetti sauce and fried rattler goes well with scrambled eggs. Elk sausage is wonderful.

I would never eat feline meat.

Alligator meat will never get protested because alligators are often villains in Walt Disney cartoons.
