Common Good/etc - from the debate tonight: (Question from audience)
Question from audience - how do you define the common good:

Newt: Purpose of govt is to create the framework, the govt should not define it or implement it.

Perry: Very narrowly defined, our govt has failed because it has not secured the border.
It's not just about public safety but economics and letting you keep more of your money.

Cain: Enforced laws, we cannot become a lawless society.
Establish a level playing field so that everyone can compete.
Fairness and respect (civil rights), every one treated fairly

On Education (kids learning right from wrong)

Santorum: Should focus on the customer of education, the parents. Educational system should be customized for each kids and should not only be about academics.

Bachman: blah blah blah....Federal govt should not be involved, parents should be, we need to empower parents to have true education choice.

Final Question: Preserving life - what about moral justification for war:

Paul: Christ taught about peace and church struggled with just wars. We don't go to war without declaration and all since ww2 were illegal. Added to the debt, was not in our national defense. Wars destroy families. Etc.

Bachman: I am a mother. Has called family members of those that have died. If the US is attacked or threatened we must secure the safety of the American people. I would have to be convinced we have a clearly defined mission, go in and get out. Wants to bring back water boarding and detention.

Cain: Endowed by their creator...life, liberty, pursuit of Happiness - and implied that you have a right to protect freedom, justification for war. Will not send young men and women into war unless it is clear as to why, would not send kids to war unless he would send his own kids.

Perry: As a farmer who has worn the uniform and commander of 20,000 national guard troops - when America's interest is in jeopardy we should intervene. Define how to win quickly, don't let a congressman decide what the rules of engagement are, let the troops win the war.
