St. Louis County assessor finds 79 planes that weren't on rolls
It turns out Sen. Claire McCaskill wasn't the only person who wasn't paying taxes on an airplane in St. Louis County.
County Assessor Jake Zimmerman says his staff discovered 79 aircraft that should have been — but weren't — on county tax rolls. They added $1.6 million to the county's personal property tax billings this year, including $300,000 paid by McCaskill and her husband.

Now I have to pay my personal property tax to St. Louis County each year, isn't odd that people that own private jets seem to think they don't need to do so...............

Oh, wait those that can afford private aircraft might just be in the 1%, how silly of me.....:spank:

1. Those who are wealthy because they've made great contributions to humanity...
... are outnumbered by those who are wealthy because they are scumbags.

4. Devil's advocate here..
"Rich people" often have bills for such things sent to their accountants' offices, and then sign whatever paperwork is presented to them. I'm betting that most people in that position do not read the stuff, and are counting on their accountants being accurate.

Accountants may believe they are doing their clients a favor whenever they "save" them money. If a bill is not received for taxes due, they probably do not follow up to ,make sure a bill is sent. They probably just file it away mentally, and plan to pay it when it's finally presented.

7. A lot of people don't realize that personal property tax is charged
on assets.

The person who sells these big ticket items should inform their customers that there will be Property Tax assessed on purchased assets.

6. The Personal Property Tax is simply a tax
based upon vehicles and some other categories of personal property. It can (and does) come across as a rather goofy tax, but frankly I believe that if it didn't exist the money would have to come from some other form of taxes (perhaps the Giant Rutabaga tax or something of that ilk). I pay it on the vehicles I own each year and it declines as the vehicles age decreasing in value. As vehicles are licensed by the state we are required to provide PP tax receipts when we renew our plates. Aircraft are registered by the Federal Government so that particular "fail safe" is not in play for aircraft owners. That said, it is pretty clear on the declaration form that we receive each March so I don't have too much sympathy for someone who has been avoiding this tax which helps to fund our County government which like all are experiencing budget shortfalls, enough so that the closure of some 23 county parks is being discussed.

8. We don't have a personal property tax here in Pennsylvania.....
I was looking for work in Virginia and DC, and learned about this tax and it appalled me. Here in PA, I paid 7% tax when I bought my car and that's it until I buy another car.

9. I understand
and as I said it does come across as a rather goofy tax plan, yet the government services which it funds need some type of cash flow. If in the areas where you live and were looking for work did not have this tax, they will be funded through either higher property taxes or some other means. I visited PA just recently going to Falling Waters, Fort Necessity, Gettysburg & attempted to navigate around Philadelphia (to no avail) and I would note that we here do not have toll roads and in the immediate St. Louis area we have a Zoo that is world class that you can visit completely free of charge as it is funded through a tax on area residents for a zoo & museum district. Every region operates somewhat differently, it's just the way it's done here.
