What is a good cop?
I have seen some people claim good cops exist in US. In the context of OWS, what is a good cop? How does a good cop react in the face of police brutality?

1. my definition of good cop is one who makes an arrest based on this law::
Civil Rights Laws and Police Misconduct

A statute known as Section 1983 is the primary civil rights law victims of police misconduct rely upon. This law was originally passed as part of the Civil Rights Act of 1871, which was intended to curb oppressive conduct by government and private individuals participating in vigilante groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan. It is now called Section 1983 because that is where the law has been published, within Title 42, of the United States Code. Section 1983 makes it unlawful for anyone acting under the authority of state law to deprive another person of his or her rights under the Constitution or federal law. The most common claims brought against police officers are false arrest (or false imprisonment), malicious prosecution, and use of excessive or unreasonable force.

11. I only met him briefly, but he seemed to me that he was ....
... not the type to be subject to a mob mentality.


In any case, your posts seem to push the viewpoint that "all cops are bad". That is a)wrong and b)not helpful.

12. If there are good cops in the US, why are they allowing their peers to brutalize the populace?
We have yet to see a good cop stop the bad cops from committing violent acts against peaceful people.

Suppose you saw the following set of numbers: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1.

If you were asked to guess which number comes next in the series, you would probably guess 1.

to save a little girl after the mother started screaming that her daughter was still inside.

A good cop is my friend who pulled over a drunk driver--so he would not kill anyone--and had to fight for his life as the driver and his friend attempted to take his gun and kill him.

A good cop is my friend who waved at me and smiled as I stood with the local Occupy demonstration.

A good cop is my friend who went into my neighbor's home when they came home to find their window broken and the dog whimpering in the yard. He did not know what he would find, but risked his life for my neighbor.

A good cop is my friend who talked to a little girl at the CPS office and said something that the little girl had never heard before: "its not your fault."

9. Stops and corrects the officer doing the abuse.
IMO. A good cop is there to 'protect and serve' The People of the United States. A good cop is one that never abuses their privileges IMO. A good cop stands with The People and not with the PTB. A lapdog stands with the PTB. A PIG sprays pepper spray into the eyes of non-violent protesters to incite a riot. A PIG doesn't deserve to wear the badge or get called an Officer of the PEACE.

PEACE...that word should really mean something. Sadly we have goon squads that take orders for the white shirts trying so desperately to make the OWS crowd get violent so they can declare it OVER.

They want it OVER.

14. One who ARRESTS another cop on the spot
when he sees that cop committing a crime. You know, just like he would do if he saw anyone ELSE committing a crime. I have never heard of this happening. Every single time we have pics or video of a cop beating the shit out of or otherwise criminally abusing someone, any other cops present are either standing around doing nothing to stop it, or (more often) they actively join in themselves.

This should happen routinely. If "bad cops" really are such a minority and the "good cops" really don't like them, this would solve the problem pretty quickly. So, why does it never, ever happen?
