Somebody needs to stand up in the House and Senate and read this: |

Oliver Cromwell Speech - Dissolution of the Long Parliament
Dissolution of the Long Parliament by Oliver Cromwell given to the House of Commons, 20 April 1653
It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.
Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter'd your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?
Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil'd this sacred place, and turn'd the Lord's temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress'd, are yourselves gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.
In the name of God, go!
Whether you like Cromwell or not, this is a wicked rant that applies to Congress. They could hardly do any more harm. Take their salaries and pensions too! Put this in the papers.

4. One reason why Cromwell could rant - he had an army of followers |
|

And this was back in the day when for every single musket the government had, the people had one too. There should also be a discussion of the difference between a Parliamentary style government, and the strange system we have here. By summer of 2008, most of the public had turned against Bush, but he remained in power, with all the Talking Heads talking about our system of "free Elections." I am not totally sure if there would be benefits to such a Parliamentary system, but it was truly sad to have Bush in office until Jan 20th, 2009. When most here in the USA despised him.
Now we are in a vastly different era than what was going on in Cromwell's time. In fact, some of us are on the internet seriously discussing if our government's DRONES will be used against us - and these drones could be used, even though so far most of the folks at Occupy are of the Pacifist persuasion!
People in Cromwell's day were so incensed that at one point, the mob descended upon the house of an official they despised, and called out, for most of the night and until dawn, death threats against the inhabitants of said house.
Can you imagine what would happen if anyone involved at an Occupy! movement suggested such!

6. I didn't say anybody with OWS! |
|
They would be well out of this gesture. Let it come from another, unexpected angle.
I wish someone could get the floor and read it with fervor.
It would be a symbolic gesture, but one that would be on point. I wasn't getting into a whole sea change of government.

The public) was with him.
It's a great speech. I for one feel better for reading it here, once again.
But who would read it? Bernie Sanders would like the speech, but he isn't interested in wasting his time explaining to the vermin why they are vermin.
Kucinich would read it, but he's scared of something.
And for some speaker to speak the speech without being able to indicate that there is a sizable portion of Americans who are with Occupy!, then what good is the speech? The only thing that the Whores in Congress are interested in is whether or not they will get re-elected. That is one thing that has remained the same since the days of Cromwell.
But again, in Cromwell's time, the elected portion of the populace was also scared of their physical safety. We don't have that option here. Just as Ghandi did not have that option in India, when the British occupied their nation and made it impossible for the people of India to even use their own locally produced SALT. (I am sadly watching the local economies of the West Coast being destroyed as the Obama Administration's DOJ prevents the local medical marijuana clinics from flourishing. Some of the funds paid out to counties was significant enough that local newspapers touted how the MM tax revenue allowed for police to remain on the force, and for other local services to continue.)

I believe the general public does feel this way about Congress. OWS could have not formed, and they would still feel this way.
As I said, it would be a symbolic gesture. They invite different people to say the beginning prayer. Sneak someone in who would read this instead.
Didn't mean to be so grumpy!

10. I seriously doubt the people of Ireland |
|
or Scotland would admire this man. While I can appreciate his comments to his own people, I despise the way he desired the dominance of others. Slaves are made in such ways while talking out of both sides of your mouth.
I do realize the religion of the time. However, he will find no adoration from me.

12. I don't think anybody is hoping you will adore Cromwell. |
|
His words are presented here as an appropriate message for our present cesschamber of legislators.
I wouldn't care if these words were spoken by a Kermit the Frog -- the speech is singularly applicable at present, I think.

I see the attempt to "in some way" tie these words to OWS.
However, I can not. Futhermore, I sincerely hope that those involved with OWS do not consider these words to be of substance.

15. I am not trying to tie these words to OWS! I never was. |

The post was made about that group of mooks in DC, and the speech isn't an endorsement of Cromwell. I said that whether you liked him or not, etc. Sure enough up it pops, and I understand in a way. But don't lecture me ever again about Southerners not being able or willing to forget. We aren't alone. As for the speech, it is still one of the best 'Come to Jesus' moments I have ever heard. It applies to Congress to a tee. I still wish somebody would read them out like this. People who hear it wouldn't know A Roundhead from a Lego by in large.

don't want replies.
I have no desire to lecture you, as i'm sure it would not take.
I never said anything about southerners, or Jesus, or legos for that matter.
Your thinking not hard enough. Good luck on your future posts. Your gonna be a big hit.

17. It's never been done, but the President has the sole authority to dissolve the congress... |
|
...if, and only if, the congress cannot agree on whether to dissolve. My fantasy scenario was that, once Franken was seated (and thus we were filibuster proof), we passed a series of laws that fixed everything in the country, then the congress dissolved the next year when we lost 2010. Pow, you have a split congress, the President would chose to dissolve them.
Would've been fucking epic.
