Hold The White House To What They Said In August About The SuperCommittee And Taxes
"If it fails either to produce something or if Congress fails to act on it, you can be sure that the President will honor his promise to veto any legislation that would extend the Bush high-income tax cuts beyond 2012, which would, of course, create nearly $1 trillion in revenue raisers when that happens."

White House officials said Obama would veto an extension even if it were coupled with a continuation of cuts for middle class Americans that he supports.

"The president has made clear that if we don't have comprehensive tax reform, he is not going to extend," one official said.

"And those in Congress will have to decide whether or not they will then allow the middle-class tax cuts to expire. Our sense is they probably won't. So, again, I think that's an incentive for everybody."

1. Get Obama to say he'll veto on national TV and I'll believe it
He can't back down then.

If he doesn't do that, we already know he's got the spine of a jellyfish/he's really on their side - doesn't matter which is true for each is effectively true anyway.

13. I watched that clip. He only threatened to veto any new bill that would cancel the automatic cuts
Apples and oranges.

. . . to veto an extension of the wealthy tax cuts.

He did mention them in the opening, though. I don't know if he considered all of the spending cuts and the tax cuts together. That's not how he's addressed them in the past.

5. "...if we don't have comprehensive tax reform, he is not going to extend..."
He said before he wouldn't extend the Bush/Obama tax cuts for the wealthy again, no matter what. Now he's saying he'll extend if there's comprehensive tax reform, whatever that is.

The President responded by saying it was vital to have revenues as part of the mix, stressing that a budget can't be balanced on non-defense discretionary spending or the "backs of the most vulnerable." Obama added, according to the member, that, "he would not support extending the Bush tax cuts for the top two percent again no matter what hostages Republicans took."

This rhetoric is ominous if you don't want the Bush/Obama tax cuts for the wealthy to be extended yet again. He's creating wiggle room.

10. I took 'comprehensive reform' to mean the elimination of the wealthy tax
. . . reinforcing the declaration that he won't extend the middle class cuts if coupled with the wealthy ones.

Any other interpretation directly contradicts the veto threat.

12. I hope you are right but look out when you see weasel words like 'comprehensive'.
It's the type of rhetoric that intentionally leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

6. "...if we don't have comprehensive tax reform, he is not going to extend,"
Comprehensive...? Wouldn't that require quite a few creative accountants and lawyers to get real jobs?

The company reported worldwide profits of $14.2 billion, and said $5.1 billion of the total came from its operations in the United States...Its American tax bill? None. In fact, G.E. claimed a tax benefit of $3.2 billion. Its extraordinary success is based on an aggressive strategy that mixes fierce lobbying for tax breaks and innovative accounting...

16. That ship sailed a year or two ago
We know he's a caver/on their side. We know he's always handing good money after bad. We know he backs down more than he stands up to fight. And since we all know that, we have to to push the reluctant leader into not going with his spineless gut on this one, and every point of action going forward. As I said, that ship sailed and Obama wasn't on it.

26. I can read between the lines
"If Congress does nothing", in other words, Congress just has to do something (anything) to justify making the Bush Tax Cuts permanent, as they did last time with the extension, and Obama will let it go.

28. the extension of the middle class tax cuts
were the only reason the President agreed to the extension -- that, and the looming debt ceiling deadline. The WH has already said he wouldn't accept the extension, even as part of a bill extending the middle-class breaks. There really isn't anything else pending that would come close to justifying an extension and the WH hasn't indicated they believe anything would justify an extension. There's nothing 'between the lines' to alter any of that reality. The administration should be challenged (by us and the media) to hold to his veto threat.

25. Not cynicism, reality..
The responsibility for one's actions is inversely proportional to one's status.

The higher the status the less responsibility and the lower the status the more the responsibility.

I'm amazed at how many people can't see this, it's evident everywhere you look.
