Which is why they're so happy to finally be able to pull it out and use it.

Too bad they're using it on their own citizens.

3. It is an APC, not a tank, yes there is a difference
2.- It has a valid use, like when you need to extract officers under fire... like hiere in San Diego where they did roll one out. Officers were pinned down by guy on high point with a 22 rifle. That was a proper use.

3.- At OWS it is not the correct deployment and it is meant to intimidate.

11. It is like ancient, no not kidding
so I guess they could back fit it with a Recoilles rifle or a Pintle Mounted 50 cal, or grenade launcher. The LRAD... maybe. Good question if the electronics in this thing can support it. In other words if they were modernized.

It is the command version of the M113

Oh god why do I know this crap?

37. Rear entry for transport of personnel
All M113 have a large transport bay... well not large, enough for a squad, that opens in the back.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M113_armored_personnel_carrier

Stats are there.

And as I said, this thing is ancient by modern standards.

42. Ah I see tactics is not your strong point :-)
and the one in San Diego is not an M113, but still rear entry. You drive that thing AHEAD of the pinned officers, the hatch is opened and they scurry in and then you drive back out. If anybody is injured you have a medic on board who comes out, grabs injured officer and pulls saith officer into the vehicle.

Here in san diego the shooter was so good, trained sniper, that he actually defeated the armor. He kept pinging on the same place. The armored glass was defeated.

50. They were not deployed to Iraq
the M113 left military service a while ago... ok the last deployment was in 1991 with Guard Units... during the first go around.

The Israelis still use it for training... but hey they were still using WW II vintage modernized Shermans for training even after the Merkava saw wide deployment.

The modern day APC is this guy.

The striker...

Which is slowly replacing this

The Bradley...

The M113s had some serious issues... but as a police vehicle in a proper situation... they could be valuable. Of course if we see the kind of crap that is happening in Mexico with the War on Drugs... those toys will have a survival of ten seconds... but that has to do with what the Cartels are able to field, a few generation ahead of what the M113 was designed to resist.

Sadly me, every time I cover OWS all those tactics one learns from working the streets, are coming back, with a vengeance, including routes of escape, not one, not two, multiple.

74. Sometimes for riot work...
...they equip them with automatic tear-gas cannons or high-pressure water hoses. The vehicles can run over or push aside most barriers, are impervious to thrown rocks, and can't be flipped over by protesters.

But they can be used as rescue vehicles by the cops. For instance, smashing through a building wall to deploy a SWAT team. Or being used as a moving shield to extract hostages or police or trapped civilians.

Sometimes you just need a bulletproof box that moves.

Not for OWS work, though.

here is a yahoo article
its fascinating the spin given by the media
http://news.yahoo.com/police-tank-spurs-wild-speculation-occupy-tampa-rally-165800157.html
TAMPA, Fla. -- The police department's Tactical Response Team (TRP) rolled out a tank at the Occupy Tampa protest today at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown.

The purpose of the vehicle was unclear and its presence immediately sparked wide speculation among the protestors. I have to admit that when I first saw the tank, it felt ominous and an extreme measure.

But then I took a closer look.

The tank, it turns out, was actually a rescue vehicle. It does not have any weapons on it and the side is clearly labeled "Rescue 2." Its full name is Amphibious Rescue Vehicle -- "Rescue 2" and it goes by the nickname "High-Top Shoe." Despite its somewhat menacing appearance, it is just a vehicle that's built tough for transporting people in extreme conditions and circumstances.

and the reporter asked them WHY

Unfortunately, I was unable to get any comments from any TPD officers on the "Rescue 2" and why they felt the need to bring out to the protest.

29. Here is Wiki's definition
A tank is a tracked, armoured fighting vehicle designed for front-line combat which combines operational mobility, tactical offensive, and defensive capabilities

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank

Firepower is normally provided by a large-calibre main gun in a rotating turret and secondary machine guns, while heavy armour and all-terrain mobility provide protection for the tank and its crew, allowing it to perform all primary tasks of the armoured troops on the battlefield.<1>

Tanks were used to spearhead the initial invasion of Iraq. As of 2005, there were 1,100 M1 Abrams used by the United States Army in the course of the Iraq War, and they have proven to have an unexpectedly high level of vulnerability to roadside bombs.

I find that interesting. There is no parking in front of Curtis Hixon that I know of. Maybe being stopped at a red light means "parked" to some. There are indeed red lights. A vehicle stopped might be seen as parked. Or something.

Context sucks on the internet. Again, reading the article might be good. Doing so without so much sought for anger might be better.
