AC/DC jumps the shark ("Back In Black" riff used in WalMart "Black Friday" commercial)
Just heard it in the commercial break on The History Channel.

Woman in WalMart walks up to the clerk and says "Do you know why they call it Black Friday" and then says "Because I'm a savings Ninja."

Then the riff.

Broke my fucking heart.

I know the band's last album, "Black Ice," was a "WalMart Exclusive," but...

4. Did Valdemart have permission to use the song, or
did it just steal it?

6. My guess is that since they do business with WalMart, they gave permission
It's like the time Page & Plant sold the rights to "Rock & Roll" to Cadillac.

It hurt, but the two of them laughed all the way to the bank.

7. They're just following most of the big classic rock bands
who have done the same. Like The Who's Baba O' Reilly or the The Allman Brothers Melissa, it's just sad to think about for us oldsters who grew up with this stuff.

9. I know, the irony was not lost on me. I spent the majority
of my young life obsessed with The Who, that's why it hurt so bad to see Baba O'Reilly in a commercial. I guess I should just be happy that they've left Quadrophenia alone so far.

24. That's more of a "chicken or egg" thing
Which is worse...the song or the commercial itself

11. Well, a credit card company used the Moody Blues.
"Tuesday Afternoon."

And rock bands have a long history of doing commercial jingles too.

12. If Walmart wanted to use one of my songs in an xmas ad
I'd sign so fast heads would spin. Why would anyone think they're (AC/DC) not in it for money? Didn't Pete Townsend say that anyone who says they're not in the rock'n'roll business for the money is lying?

18. Probably is, but...
...three weeks ago, I got cable TV again for the first time in about four years. So this was the first time I've heard it anywhere.

16. I stopped listening to "classic rock" in my early 20's. Pretty much anything I liked was

commercialized and overexposed to death. Can't stand Zeppelin or Petty or AC/DC or Skynrd or whatever anymore. Jimi is losing his appeal.

Say what you want about Wesley Willis but at least I know it'll never be piped into my home to sell me medication for heartburn or herpes or erectile dysfunction...

17. I don't think that's worse than Devo's "Beautiful World" being used in a Target commercial.
Or Creedence Clearwater's "Fortunate Son" being used in, for fuck's sake, an advert for Wrangler jeans. Which consisted of lots of flagwaving feelgood patriotic imagery, and just a tiny snippet of the vocals: "Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, oooh, they're red white and blue"...and that's it. I was absolutely gobsmacked when I saw that and I think I stuttered and spluttered for a good five minutes.

23. I'll give you the Creedence, but c'mon, the "Beautiful World" one was great.
The idea that a giant corporate behemoth would use that particular song to sell stuff had to appeal to their sensibilities.

20. Yeah, why can't they keep it real?
...like when they licensed it as a backing track for Neil Patrick Harris and animated, blue kid's toys?

21. Are you claiming AC/DC ever had any 'street cred'?
They've always been a fun, commercial band. There's never been any 'message' in their music.
