Official: Spokane MLK Day Bomb 'WORST DEVICE I'VE EVER SEEN'
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/01/official_spokane_mlk_day_bomb_worst_device_ive_eve.php?ref=fpblg

A bomb found along the route of a Martin Luther King Day parade in Spokane, Wash., on Monday was a sophisticated device with the potential to devastate, an official on the case tells the AP.

"They haven't seen anything like this in this country," the official said. "This was the worst device, and most intentional device, I've ever seen."

The official also said the device was rigged to a remote detonator.

Officially, the FBI has not released many details about the bomb, other than that it was viable and could have caused multiple casualties.

1. shouldn't there be a big hysteria over this bomb?
like all the politicians commenting and grandstanding, constant coverage on TV and all kinds of experts helping us make sense of it. That seems to be what normally happens with attempted terrorist attacks.

44. Besides, they were aiming it at celebrants of MLK Day,
so that the worst that could have happened would have been the deaths and maimings of a bunch of liberals and socialists.

7. The one lone nut theory serves the purpose well...
... the purpose being to continue pretending that all that racial profiling of muslims makes any kind of sense.

If you admit publicly that something is very wrong in the bowels of this country, then you have to publicly do something about it.

Is the FBI, BATF et al really ready to launch an all-out war on home-grown right wing extremists who use the so-called Tea Party as cover for domestic terrorism?

Far easier to preserve the fiction that the country is under constant threat from brown people with semtex in their pants.

Plus, it gives the helpful TSA screeners the ongoing excuse to cop feels on anybody who refuses to have nekkid pitchers taken of them by the full body scanners.

To continue the fairy tale of "one nation, indivisible...," it's always going to be one lone nut with three names who gets the blame. That way, nobody has to talk about the support system in place to provide funding, arms, technical expertise, pay legal fees, etc.

There should be a big hysteria.

Nope, hysteria is hushed when it's the homegrown terrorists. Nothing to see here.

The terrorists will strike again and yet again until they get the attention they are seeking.

The assassination of Dr. George Tiller.
The murders at the Unitarian church in Tennessee.
The arson attack on the mosque construction site in Tennessee.
The killing of three police officers in Pittsburgh by a rabid right wing Obama hater.
The murder of a security guard at the Holocaust Museum.
Mail bombs sent to Janet Napolitano and other administration officials.
Rocks thrown through the windows of the offices of Louise Slaughter and the Monroe County Democratic Committee.

If you want to reach back far enough, the sending of anthrax letters to Democratic senators and "liberal media" targets.

47. As long as they need to. Which will most likely be when some idiot touches off...
...a full blown race riot.

No prizes for guessing what the media will do with that.

And if the riots last any appreciable length of time, there's a lot of teabagger types who will do "their bit for the country" by going "Nigger hunting".

You only have to look at the oficially sanctioned race baiting in the country: The way police forces treat darker skinned folk (even before we get to matters like Rodney King); the entirely disproportionate incarceration rate of African Americans; the disproportionate response to black on white crime, compared to the response to white on black; Katrina; Schooling; Higher education; and non-blue collar job prospects.

I truly believe, someone (several someones) want open conflict (if not outright warfare) in the streets of the USA. And I am NOT talking about knuckle dragging, mouth breathers in the tea party rank and file, but extremely powerful people who intend to use such a conflict to push aside all those pernickety legal impediments to their assuming their natural place, not at the top of the heap, but entirely separate from and ABOVE that heap.

The corporate media have had enough of Teabaggers being scrutinized since the attack on Giffords. At least there a young man with known mental health issues was arrested.
The placement & construction of this bomb point to someone with knowledge of what is needed to guarantee the most lethal outcome. The backpack was placed on a metal bench backed by a brick wall so the force of the blast would be directed into the people along the street.
Sick fuck to be sure, and the media just don't want to talk about it.

Bleak, broke and depressing, I got stuck there for several months for work in the late 90's. The mayor was good for a laugh though... who was caught trying to lure boys on the internet with the promise of sporting goods for blowjobs. Naturally a conservative republican...

He was my scout master. Don't get me started about boys sleeping in his tent. Most interesting part was I went to his troop to finish my Eagle scout because my old scout master was falsely accused of indecent liberties (yes just like the south park episode).

51. The Who the day is for; the people he gave a voice to; who was targetted;...
...and almost certainly who did it.

Making this a news item of note, can only be detrimental to the political climate being fostered (with the media's help) by the far right. Report it with a minimum of fuss, because no report at all might cause some people to kick up enough fuss to bring the matter to the attention of the dear peepul. And let it die a death under the weight of another Charlie Sheen meltdown.

Somebody told them to keep a lid on it so they have. The "media" is a complete fraud, a shell of what used to be a real way of disseminating information. The only things that get through their corporate filters are things they think will help them sell commercials.

55. The "media" is a few elite corporations who censor reality and sell products
They lost what little credibility they had when they all decided to treat torture as a topic of debate. The "media" will exploit anything regardless of how despicable it is and censor whatever their propaganda masters tell them to ignore.

Bluntly stated, the "media" are whores, nothing real comes from them except their desire to sell themselves and the product they're pushing.

no follow up at all that I can find. Just the breaking news that there was a suspicious package, that the bomb squad blew it up, and then no further word. So.... was it not a continuing story because it was somebody's laundry or because it was another intentional device?

Actually I'm thinking it was no big deal because the location doesn't make any sense if someone wanted to make a statement or injure people, but just the same...
