Has anyone else seen "I Melt With You"? |
|
Extremely dark and twisted. No truly likable characters, the action is mostly a demented drug orgy. But, it was worth watching. The Big Chill references were interesting. It drew valid comparisons between boomers and Xers. They started adulthood with war and were living in a time of peace and prosperity by middle age. We were right there with them when we reached adulthood and look where we are now.... Living in times with circumstanced similar to the worst of the boomer years AND those of the greatest generation.

1. I saw it at the Sundance festival in January. |

My impression at the time was that it was substantially flawed, extremely dark, and very, very memorable. Most people who saw it seemed to have a really strong reaction--it was either brilliant or the worst piece of trash ever committed to screen.
I've been waiting to see it again for awhile.

2. That audience reaction makes sense |

I had somewhat of a combination reaction. I really disliked watching some of it, and I wouldn't go anywhere near brilliant, But once I had the whole package and the comparison in mind I enjoyed deconstructing the comparison to the Big Chill. I was bothered by the lack of positive representations of women.

3. I think my reaction was somewhat similar. |

Although I've never seen the Big Chill and I'm younger than both the boomers and Xers.
There were very clear things that bothered me about the film. Carla Gugino's character seemed tossed in to provide some sort of female balance, but her character seemed paper thin and some of her lines were terrible. The first half of the film seemed to be an unending display of shallow excess and misogyny, and I did think it could have been trimmed a little.
Still, the overall lack of a positive female character is consistent with the tone of the whole film-- the movie, I think, tries to get you into the head of a few fairly broken individuals, and I think it's fairly successful at that; I'm not sure there's really a positive representation of humanity in general to be found here. Gugino's character, as poorly written as she is, is probably the most sympathetic.

4. You should see the Big Chill |

Without giving the whole thing away, I can tell you that everything falls into place after they all get a pair of Nikes.
