‘It’s a Food Product, Essentially’: Fox News Starts Spinning Pepper Spray Cops
Tonight, Fox News hosts Bill O'Reilly and Megyn Kelly got to talking about a UC Davis police officer's appalling use of pepper spray on nonviolent protesters over the weekend. Guess what direction the conversation took!
If you guessed "needlessly deferential to authority and dismissive to the suffering of protesters," you guessed correctly!

"I don't think we have the right to Monday-morning quarterback the police," O'Reilly says, "particularly at a place like UC Davis, which is a fairly liberal campus." God forbid! We'd never want to question Lt. John Pike's decision to generously and indifferently dust peacefully sitting protesters with pepper spray from only a few feet away. Especially given that Davis is, you know, a liberal campus! And, gosh, even if we were going to Monday-morning quarterback the police, shouldn't we remember, as Megyn Kelly tells O'Reilly, that pepper spray is "a food product, essentially"?

Now, look, Kelly and O'Reilly aren't saying the cops did the right thing! God, no! "I agree looks bad," Kelly says. It's just that the protesters were sitting in a place where they weren't allowed to sit, so it's kind of their own fault! And in any event what right do we have to judge a cop for spraying a simple food product on the faces of a bunch of liberal college kids doing something criminal? You know? Maybe he was just trying to feed them?

6. That's exactly where my mind went
Megyn Kelly, were she "reporting" during the civil rights demonstrations of the 1950s and 1960s would doubtless be talking about how refreshing it can be to be doused with water on a hot Southern summer's day. Okay, maybe a fire hose brings the water with a little more pow than your garden hose, but really, water is water! What're those uppity folks complaining about? (And notice, please, that she didn't say "uppity black folks" because she's not racist. At all. So stop saying that.)

5. Megan, would you like to have a UCDavis cop serve some to your family
Thursday? Make a great feature you can run over and over. We can watch how your family enjoys the taste and the service.

7. "particularly at a place like UC Davis, which is a fairly liberal campus."
So what does a lib campus have to do with anything? I would imagine feeling threatened for their their own safety would come from a gun toting tea bagger group of worked up college students.

11. Does anyone else get the feeling that the right wants nothing more
than to shave our heads, force us to wear a big red L on our clothes and round us all up in a bunch of cattle cars?

12. Mustard gas -- got the word "mustard" in it
Usin' it would be like eatin' a ham sandwich. Maybe a little pepper spray and mustard gas would be like eatin' spicy mustard.

13. About the dumbest thing I've heard on this.
I think they should be willing to sit and get pepper-sprayed (and then water-boarded for good measure) and give us a first hand account of how insignificant it is to have a food product sprayed in your face (where we keep the most vulnerable things like eyes and noses.

The assholery just gets worse, doesn't it?
