Went to Court for Brooklyn Bridge OWS Arrest Today: A Shout Out to the National Lawyers Guild
Edited on Tue Nov-22-11 03:25 PM by UnrepentantLiberal
I haven't seen them mentioned here.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you

Everyone else is getting mentioned but them. They put their time in to give us representation in court and don't ask for a thing in return.

They called me last night to make sure I would be in court today. And then when I got there, there were lawyers with checklists making sure everyone was there and then a lawyer to represent me in court. And with little thanks and no rock star demonstrater status. Just there doing the work behind the scenes.

Can we give them a kick and rec?

3. A rec and a kick.
Whenever I attended a demonstration in LA, I always looked for the National Lawyers Guild hats. Then I stayed close to one or two during the march.

60. Something else to point out
Faux and fiends have been alledging that the NLG Is funded by Soros and the NLG is funding occupy. Nothing could be further from the truth. The NLG survives on less than 10% of O'Reilly's fat salary. So please donate.

17. They are patriots, they've been there from the beginning,
doing the work our Government should be doing, protecting the Constitutional rights of the people.

Same goes for the ACLU. And a few judges, in Cleveland, Nashville and Boston who chose to rule in favor of the people, at least until they get a chance to make their case, rather than being beaten into submission.

Other than that, who IS on the side of the people?

A big thank you to all of them!

19. Well, no.
I'm just your average let me out of here. Okay, I guess I should have done a "YOU'RE OUT OF ORDER!" The way they go about trials is (meant to be) quite intimidating. Lots of cops and a judge that can change your daily plans at will.

22. "Have you no sense of decency, sir?"
Edited on Tue Nov-22-11 05:04 PM by starroute
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Lawyers_Guild

The NLG was founded in 1937 by Harold I. Cammer, George Wagman Fish and others. The National Lawyers Guild was the nation's first racially integrated bar association. Among the NLG's first causes was its support of President Roosevelt's New Deal, which was opposed by the American Bar Association (ABA). NLG assisted the emerging labor movement, and opposed the racial segregation policies in the ABA and in society in general. . . .

During the McCarthy era, the NLG was alleged by Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr. and by the House Un-American Activities Committee to be a Communist front organization. Federal Bureau of Investigation director J. Edgar Hoover repeatedly tried to get successive Attorneys General to declare the NLG a "subversive organization," but without success. On June 9, 1954, on the 30th day of the Army-McCarthy Hearings, McCarthy launched an attack against Fred Fisher (a junior attorney working at the same law firm as the Army's attorney, Joseph Welch) for having associated with the NLG while in law school. The attack provoked an impassioned response on the part of Welch, who angrily rebuked McCarthy with his famous plea, "You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?" Welch's speech was widely viewed as having undermined McCarthy's credibility and, coupled with an earlier March 1954 exposé by Edward R. Murrow, led to a major shift in public opinion against McCarthy.

The NLG was also involved in the American Civil Rights Movement from an early date, organizing a 1947 conference on the subject of lynching. This continued into the 1960s with the creation of the Guild's Committee for Legal Assistance. This era also saw NLG involvement in anti-war (including draft resistance) and anti-poverty efforts.

... undermine the credibility of today's conservative blowhards and evil idiots the way that they could back then, to the point of shifting public opinion against them.

40. To ALL the OWSers
Thank you for being there when we can't

Thank you for speaking the words that we have in our souls

Thank you for putting your hearts and bodies where we are unable.

-------------------------------------
To those of you who have been just as pissed but haven't join the protesters: the 1% think they can shut us up by their brutal tactics. They are wrong.

For every pepper sprayed OWSer we need 5 more of you out on the streets. For everyone arrested, we need 10 more. For every OWSer beaten by the cops we need 100 more.

If you are physically able you need to be there on the line with your brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, even the 80 year old grandmother that was viciously maced recently.

Let's grow this thing. Let's put it on steroids!

46. I don't remember what the legal terms for my arrest were,
or what the lawyer who was representing me suggested I plead. I can only tell you that if I don't get arrested again for six months this charge will be off my record. After that I was free to go with no fine and no jail time. I'm guessing that the lawyers and law students are doing this pro bono. That's just a guess.

Thank you for bumping this thread to the front page. Hopefully some of them read this website and will see how much we appreciate what they do for us.
