Poll question: Agree or disagree: Democrats are more likely than average to be geeks. |
|
Something I've noticed, both among people I personally know in Democratic politics and people I've only met online: it seems to me that Democrats are more likely than average to be "geeks" as commonly defined: into science, math, sci-fi, and related subjects. I've found more fans of things like Battlestar Galactica and XKCD.com among Democrats than I've ever found among other groups. One person told me flat out that "It's because we are all geeks." I've had a hard time refuting this, as since then I've found geeky people as diverse as Democratic State Senate candidates, former employees of the DSCC, and random left-wing bloggers.
So out of your personal experience... agree or disagree?

1. Well, Dems are more likely to think critiquely, utilize scientific theory and principles, |
|
employ logic, and value education. If all that makes us geeks, then whatever . . . .

2. Obviously, I don't really know; but, if I had to guess, I'd think, yes, |
|
marginally, maybe geekism trends Democratic.

3. I don't believe that most Democrats are into science and math. On the |
|
contrary, IMO, we are far more likely more likely to be into Liberal Arts and Humanities than other political groups, more likely to be into the various arts (just look at music and Hollywood where it's hard to find a republican except for country music).

We need to set up infrastructure to conduct a survey of a statistical sample of registered democrats and overlay that data over... Wait, first we should probably define the attributes and characteristics of geeks and set up a survey question so that X out of Y questions answered as somewhat to strongly geeky indicate a geek tendency... Oh, but before that, I have to DM my group's D&D game this weekend, and there is that Firefly marathon on...

6. Reminds me of when I made a D&D joke here on DU. |
|
There were at least four people who "got it," much more than I was expecting. :D
Oh, and speaking of which, if there's a Firefly marathon on I should clear some space on my DVR. ;)

7. I think it's more evenly split in my personal experience. |
|
I work in a small IT department (Around 20 people) of a 1000+ employee company and pretty much all my co-workers are geeks and the political climate is split. It ranges from me being angry they wouldn't put "Bleeding Heart Liberal" in front of Democrat on my voter registration card to my office-mate who is a tea party republican. The others gravitate towards the middle like I guess you would assume for a group that you didn't know anything else about with some definite conservative leaners and some who don't think I'm completely looney.
And quite a few who refuse to discuss politics or religion. lol
