Syrian regime condemned by UN resolution
The United Nations General Assembly human rights panel has voted to condemn the Syrian regime for its crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.

The non-binding resolution Tuesday refers to abuses by Syria including arbitrary executions, excessive use of force against protesters, forced disappearances and torture and calls for an end to systemic human rights violations.

It also urges Syria to adopt an Arab League plan to halt the military operation against its citizens and to allow international observers into the country.

The resolution, drafted by Britain, France and Germany, received 122 votes in favour, 13 against and 41 abstentions. Arab states that voted for it included co-sponsors Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, as well as Egypt.
