Survival Shop Reports Jump In Sales To People Preparing For “Possible Collapse”

WEBSTER GROVES, MO (KMOX) - A chain of three stores that sells survival food and gear reports a jump in sales to people who are getting prepared for the “possible collapse” of society.

“We had to order fifty cases of the meals ready to eat to keep up with the demand in the past three months,” said manager Steve Dorsey at Uncle Sam’s Safari Outfitters Inc. in Webster Groves. “That’s not normal. Usually we sell 20 to 30 cases in a whole year.”

...

“I’ve had people in here that are very wealthy and they’ve spent thousands of dollars just on backpacks that they fill with survival gear, one for each person of their family,” Dorsey said, “And something where they can just grab a bag and get out of Dodge.”

Dorsey says some customers talk of stocking up on freeze-dried meals for the home, while others confide they are stashing supplies at a remote location away from the city where they would go in an emergency.

1. "Collapse" ?
When you are as poor as I am, there's not much room to fall.

11. I think they're saying the rich are afraid people will at some point get TOO mad.

2. Sometimes it seems like Missouri is...
...St. Louis on one end. Kansas City on the other. Alabama in between.

4. I feel Missouri is more nuanced than this
From a sociocultural standpoint St Louis is more like eastern US cities, KC is more like western US cities. Southeastern Missouri is more like the Deep South (I say this as a Missourian who has lived in the Deep South), the southwest is very similar to Kentucky, Tennesee or other states in the upper south. Much of northern Missouri is very Midwestern. It is a real hodgepodge!

10. that's a pretty good analysis.
Missouri is the state where all the other regions of the country come to meet.

3. My Favorite Wingnut is one of these "survivalists."
I guess my view of them is summarized by the belief that they are freaking optimists. Inspired by Glenn Beck, they only expect economic and social collapse, not foreseeing the coming global climate problems and the like. He's stockpiling MRE's and ammunition. I'm stockpiling vacuum-sealed seeds for food plants that can survive in a variety of climatic conditions.

5. Okay, I have to admit that it gives me a little bit of glee to think of the "wealthy" customers
seeing the writing on the wall and stocking up to flee with just their backpacks and their terror that the proletariat are gaining on them.

Ah, something to dream about tonight.

6. I hope the rich remain well fed until we get the chance to ...
... eat them.

Happy Thanksgiving. May you have a spasm-free holiday, filled with tryptophan-laden sleep.

8. I live in MO...
I have a friend trying to get me to buy a farm adjacent to a survival cult near Branson. What's really weird, the bulk of them are Unity church members int o peace an love and aligning the chakras and such, but a subset of them are armed to the teeth.

North of me there is a church that harbored some domestic terrorists. They have hardened the compound. I had an old lady at a yard sale ask if I had a shotgun for sale. It's pretty paranoid down south here.

I really have tried to like this place, but it is just too fearful of everything.
