Up on the rooftop… Family finds clatter is from black bear
Like many homesteaders, Martha and Dennis Ogren believe in spending time in late fall and early winter putting up food for the rest of the year, to enjoy themselves and to share with guests.

But the spicy-sweet scent of a simmering batch of apple butter brought in an unwelcome visitor earlier this month — a black bear climbing the Ogrens’ roof in search of food.

“I’ve never seen anything like it in more than 60 years of living here,” Martha said. “And I haven’t seen a bear all summer.”

1. Most roof designs do NOT take into consideration Bear loads...
snow loads, wind, and working people on the roof, yes.

Big fat hungry bears, not generally allowed for by the structural engineer!

4. Shear strengths for a bear a hard to calculate.
Especially if they are having a party.

2. Speaking of bears climbing ladders - check this one out
The guy shooting this video is deer hunting from his tree stand,
when an adult-aged black bear mosey's into the clearing directly below his tree.

What the bear does when it looks up the tree and sees the hunter may surprise you. I personally think its an "oh crap!" moment, but this guy has got to be one cool
customer ... either that, or he had a video camera in one hand and a .44 magnum in the other!
The moral of this story must be ... "if confronted by an adult-aged black bear, just be calm and act cool ... then merely ask the bear a question."

5. I think the smell of my bravado would change the bears mind about coming up too far
:hide:

I just don't understand hunting like people hunt today. As a kid we hunted to eat and we went about it all different. We gave the game a better chance than the deer hunters of today who sabotage them from above. We never did that kind of hunting.

6. Reading the article, sounds like a bear who's going to get itself into big trouble.

7. I was surprised to hear a bear up and around right now.
That's not a good sign to begin with.
