Wow 6 people killed in plane crash into Superstition Mountains

PHOENIX (KPHO) - A small plane crashed and burst into flames near the peak of the Superstition Mountains in an area called Flat Iron, east of Phoenix, Wednesday night.

Six people are feared dead, said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu. "It does not look promising."

The body of a child between the ages of 5 and 9 was recovered at the scene, said PCSO spokesman Elias Johnson at around 10 p.m.

1. Will be interesting to see what comes out of the investigation.

I have seen many pictures of that mountain. It has a shear face on one side and a sloping profile on the other side. It seems that a knowledgeable pilot would stay away from the mountain, above it from all sides. The plan may have had a mechanical problem. The mountain does not look tall enough from photos to have thermals around it, but I could be wrong.

2. The witness there said plane flew over Fountain Hills and was having mechanical problems there.
