School reports kiss between 12-year-olds as possible sex crime

from WFTV:

FORT MYERS, Fla.

A kiss between two 12-year-olds is under investigation by authorities in Fort Myers.

Deputies said they were called to Orange River Elementary School after a girl kissed one of her classmates during physical education class last week.

The school reported the incident as a possible sex crime, and the Department of Children and Families was called in.

Investigators said the girl could be charged with battery if the boy didn't consent to the kiss.

32. This story has been debunked by the school's Public Information Officer
One of the girls being interviewed told about her own family being abusive at home and *then* child protective services was called, who then told the school staff to call law enforcement.

It was LIMBOsevic among others who was griping about how "normal" hetero kissing was reported to cops while Gay incidents are now "normal."

24. Yes, but...
All sorts of crazy shit happens everywhere every day. Does that make it obligatory to add something to the effect, 'only in -----' every time a story about something nutty occurs? What purpose is served by tying the administrators who overreacted in this story to the whole state of Florida? There isn't a single locale in the country that is free from douchebaggery like this, and all that is accomplished by making note of the geographic location where it happened is to further divide us. Name any city/state/region you like, and I could dig up tons of crazy shit that occurred there...but I'm not gonna, because I realize that it's more a problem with reactionaries, fundies & RWers of all stripes in positions of power than a problem associated with any particular place.

14. Wow! In all my long years on this earth
I'd never in my wildest imagination thought that the geographic outline of Florida could pass for a phallic symbol. What a revelation! Color ME surprised :eyes:

BTW, there's plenty to find wrong with any particular locale, and I'm sure I could compile a list about Philly as long as my arm in a few minutes if I were so inclined. I love you like a brother, but I gotta tell ya that this sort of blanket condemnation serves no useful purpose - dividing us to the glee of the RW...black vs. white, northerner vs. southerner, blue-collar worker vs. white-collar worker, etc.

11. We should be writing directly to the school and it's teachers
Every time this stupis shit happens and let them all know how foolish they are. They are destroying children, they are robbing them of all the things that make growing up special. Heck, I still remember the first girl I kissed -- in second grade. These days I'd be pinned with a scarlet letter and such a vile act would go on my permanent record, for real. What happened to us? America has lost its collective mind.

15. The school might have been scared not to report it.
If one of those kids had second thoughts and embellished the story, DCF and the NoSex police would be all over them. Would you want to lose your job if the zealots get you?
I know the school might be horrible anyway, but they might have wanted to be reasonable.
It's nuts either way!

21. Did she have the boy pinned down on the floor?
Was he trying to get away? Or was it just a quick peck? Unless it was the former, absolutely does not warrent a criminal investigation. Kids kiss each other all the time, including Pre-K kids. Should they be arrested too? I have worked in a neighboring Florida High School. If all the kids in HS were arresting for kissing in school, half the student body would be in jail.

I would, and have, told them it is inappropriate behavior in school, and to go to class. The only way I would report something like a kiss would be if it appeared to be an UNWELCOME advance. Even then, I would not call the police, but would send the students to the School Counselor.

Sorry, but they are going overboard with this. There are far more SERIOUS things going on in schools than kissing.

For what it's worth, there is no school policy like this where I worked in Florida.

They have imprisoned children as young as 5 for exaggerated or contrived offenses, while simultaneously allowing financial criminals to escape justice.

25. What warrants an investigation?
Edited on Thu Nov-24-11 11:12 AM by HockeyMom
I have had a little 4 year old girl come in school crying hysterically with her face bruised and swollen. She refused to tell me what happened to her. RED FLAGS!!!!! THAT warrants the police being called. No, ifs, ands, or buts! Yet, there were coworkers who were unsure whether to report this or not. Excuse me? If you care to know, it was investigated and the girl's mother had punched her, numerous times, in the face.

As I said, there are far more important "assaults" happening than stolen kisses among kids.

26. It's hard to think of what it could be...
Edited on Thu Nov-24-11 11:15 AM by redqueen
like you said, there are clear-cut cases where it's obvious that the police should be called, but I doubt most of us imagine violent scenes when we think of stolen kisses.

They seem to allude to the idea that the kiss was unwanted, but like you said before unless she had him pinned down or something it's really hard to think of why the principle would get involved beyond an admonishment to leave him alone.

27. Damn, it's just a kiss. Get the hell over it!
There aren't many cases where I'd think that an unwanted kiss would cause some kind of trauma. Ridiculous.

29. I am so glad I am not in school in these times
When I was sixteen, I kissed a girl in the school play "for no reason," but nobody called the cops. I just got the reputation around the school of a "sex maniac," which was a tautology. As I said, I was a sixteen year old male.:)

I still rembember my first kiss at age 12.. It was after the last day in 4 grade, and I had been interesting in a girl the whole year, but never really deared to do anything with it... That last day, behind the school, I got my first kiss, an innocent kiss, but it was a kiss... And even tho I never spoke to the girl therafter - as we both moved from where we was living, I have allways remembered it with kindness..
